can someone clarify for me what i am reading at

i am am American citizen... I plan to live in LOS for at lest a year.... Am I required to have a ROUND TRIP ticket to be allowed entry through customs when I arrive?
What should I do?

Short answer: Yes.
US citizens and nationals of quite a few other nations get 60 day visas on arrival.
One can of course get a visa in advance at the nearest Thai consulate, 60 day Tourist, 90 day Business or Other class Non-Immigrant visas. Tourist visas and Non-Imm visas can be extended. Non-Immigrant visas of appropriate class are starting point for long stay visas, if one qualifies, or, one just starts the well trodden process of visa runs every 90 days to nearby consulates in Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, etc. Multiple back to back 90 day visas are possible, then all you have to do is go to the border and do some hopscotch.
There are special rules for journalists, foreign investors, NGO staff, missionaries, etc and of course legal spouses of Thais and retirees over the age of 55, but usually some financial wherewithall is required, or else work permits and regular income, etc etc.

On my last trip I was arriving from london via Syria.
I hadn't washed for 3 days
My passport had bits of vomit on it (and god knows what else)
I had a 5 week old beard and sandals that looked like I had stolen them from a homeless person.
Immigration just smiled, stamped my passport and I walked on through.
You'll have no worries.
