Hello Bros! Well, I have decided to "show up" on my girls birthday which is in the middle of May. I have used the search engine and looked in the travel section for train. I've also googled and looked for fares and timetables. Looks like the 1st class aircon cabin includes two bunk beds and the 2nd class cabin has two chairs that are made into a bed roughly 3 hours after the train leaves the station. A couple of questions: If I am travelling by myself will I be sharing the first class cabin with another person since there are two bunk beds? I checked and the fare was the same per person for 1 or 2 people. The second class seats looked very uncomfortable as seats and I can't imagine they would be much more comfortable as a bed. Anyone tried 2nd class aircon with the fold down seats? There is a $27 U.S. each way difference in price between 1st and 2nd class aircon. I will be flying biz class from U.S. to Tokyo and then biz class to BKK with a stop in Seoul. I will only be in Thailand for 9 days. Should I continue on and do the train thing or recover for a day in BKK? I'm thinking a trip to Sazanka might make the 9 hour train ride possible that same day since I can sleep on the train. Can food be purchased on the train or should I bring a few snacks and drinks along to keep in the cabin. Maybe even a Thai girl to help pass the long train ride to Surin and just put her on the next train back to BKK before I call the girlfriend. (jk) This is my first train ride from point A-B ever so I'm not sure what to expect. Never done this in the U.S. or anywhere for that matter. I also thought of hiring a car for 7 days to take me from BKK to Surin and then driving me from the Western Hotel to her village which I understand is quite remote and about an hour from where I plan to sleep. Is this an option and if so, expensive? Thoughts? Thanks in advance for the advice. LS

I went BKK to Koh Samui overnight (trains are very slow) last year - went 2nd class FAN - aircon at night gets cold I was told. Yup fold-down beds - perfectly acceptable, slept OK - if you are a tall guy then book a lower bunk (slightly more room). Doing the same to Chiang Mai and back on my next trip in May - liked the experience.

Without telling her in advance? (Just my opinion, bad idea.) Have you been to Isaan before?

Renting a minibus for a whole day doesn't cost more than 1500 baht (plus gas). Your wife has very good friends... You're sure she doesn't screw you out of money everyday? LastSurvivor, just take the train. Food will be available and the 2ndclass sleepers are very comfortable. Be sure to get a lower airconditioned one!

I agree with you. Probably not the smartest thing I have ever done but I'm going for it. Hopefully this will give me some satisfaction that she is indeed where she has told me, in Surin. I have talked to her mama and papa many times and they all want to meet me. I have been invited to visit for my birthday in July and will probably still make that trip. Provided this trip is not a disaster. I understand I could be the one in for a shock. Would rather find out sooner than later if things are not on the up and up. Have not been to Isaan but I'm just planning on getting a western hotel and calling when I arrive. CG, tell me if I'm breaking a custom or creating a hardship for her family. I do not want to cause my girl any stress. Would rather not go if that is the case.

Trains are OK,you get breakfast in with the ticket and you can buy food beer and soft drinks on board. For the sake of $27 I would get first class, much more comfortable and less chance of having to bunk up with a stranger as most Thais will opt for 2nd class and below.

go 2nd class, very comfortable, keep the money for the buffet bar, loads of drink and you might meet someone along for the ride. call her, I think not just arrive at the house better, issan, well all have there input, but for me best place I n the world, lots of drink, girls and good food, on top of this don't go mad when you know how cheaper it is from the bars in BKK. good luck

In a nutshell, yes, I think your ininvited, unannounced visit will cause tremendous stress for your girl. As this thread is about train travel to Surin, I will send you a PM with my thoughts (I just got back from a few days in Isaan last month, albeit under circumstances far different than yours).
