I am giving some thought to making this journey with TG when next in Thailand. The Express trains run at night, and the thought of some sport in your own compartment is an uplifting thought.

Being practical however I see a problem with times both ways. The trains leave hours after checkout times in hotels, and arrive very early in the morning which could be a problem having to wait to check in somewhere.

Also TG was not born in Thailand ,and as far as I am aware has no ID. She would not be able to fly, but I would hope that this would not be the case for train travel.

I imagine some of the members have travelled this way at some stage, and I would appreciate any observations you might have.

Hey Breathless, I took the train once from BKK-ChiangMai and it was great!  The trains take off around 5-6PM, so you can check out of your hotel, ask your hotel to keep your bags for you and pick them up on your way to Hualampong Station (or simply ask your hotel for a late check out).  When you get to ChiangMai, you can always ask the hotel for early check in, you may have to pay 50% more for that day though.

The train itself won't need any ID, get the overnight compartment and buy 2 seat/bed tickets.  You will get 2 booths facing each other and although you won't be using one of the beds (conductor converts the booths into beds, one on top and one on the bottom) you will then have the whole compartment to yourselves and not somebody sleeping on top of you.  Make sure to take snacks and water, the trains also have a restaurant and you can order food from.

It's a great way to travel, definitley good quality time spent with your lady as the country-side rolls by.  Very relaxing.  I'm jealous!!!
ps - How does your lady get by with no ID?  At hotels, banks, etc...

Thanks for information. Overnight train travel with TG in your own compartment will be a realisation of one of my fantasies. I hope it will not be like "The Lady Vanishes"

No problem without ID at Grand President. Just signed for her with security. I have no idea how she manages at Banks.

Just for clarification - you need to buy 1st class tickets.  if you get 2nd class, you will have a carriage to share.

You could still have fun but.....

Have a look at the offical railway site.  It gives you timetables and available seats but you cant book from it yet.   If you buy it from a travel agent there or here, it will cost more than buying direct from the station when you are here in BKK.

Just make sure you avoid the touts outside - where you go sir?  we sell you ticket too ! we only charge 200B more!  Just brush past them and go to the advance booking office to the right of the ticket windows.

TAT authorised they may be, but why pay more when you can do it yourself for less and in the same time.

Never had any problems with hotels when checking in early - especially in the low season and never been charged extra for an early either.  Might depend on your hotel.

Any decent hotel will hold onto your luggage for a few hours after you check out.

heres a hotel search link.  I was in the Starr Inn, just off Loy Kro Road ( spelling ?) very nice and quiet.  But some rooms had a very bad view.

I have been studying the web sites on relevant train journey. There indeed seems to be much more scope for some fun in first class. It would seem that there are some "helpful" people at the train station just like most other places.

Hey guys,

I'll be (back) in LOS for holiday, and I was wondering if anyone has had any trouble with, or knowledge of, what's happening on the State Railway of Thailand website?

Will be travelling from Bangkok - Chiang Mai in mid-December.

It's my first time ever booking a ticket from there, and it keeps giving me an error message every time I try to complete logging in/booking tickets.

Any help will be much appreciated! (especially from, but not limited to, the old hands in Bkk who know me..)

I'm trying other alternatives to get a train ticket in the meantime..

Be aware that random checks for illegals by Railway Police take place on trains and buses heading for or coming from borders or border areas.

For a ticket, you better go to a station counter (not all stations sell long distance or international tickets.

There used to be a fairly large travel agency on Sukhumvit (near the corner of Asoke) which has a special department for rail tickets. I think they charge only 50 baht extra or so.
