The government has announced a special four-day holiday at the end of this month to ease congestion during the 38 th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.
Trucks and buses will also be forbidden from entering the city during the meeting.
The Prime Minister's Office yesterday released a notice detailing the special measures.
“The prohibition of trucks in central Vientiane and the holiday were agreed at the government meeting on June 29.”
“July 26 to 29 has been declared a holiday for offices and both private and state schools located around the central city and Vientiane municipality to ease travel during the AMM.”
The notice also advised that during the event, each government and private sector organisation must appoint officials to ensure there is a presence in their office at all times during the meeting.
“This is to ensure communication when necessary and to prevent any incidents,” the notice stated.
“Trucks and passenger buses will also be banned from Vientiane city centre from July 20 to July 30.”
The government also advised Vientiane officials to coordinate with Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Communication and Transport, Post and Construction officials to manage and check vehicles and people traveling into Vientiane during the time of the meeting.
According to the notice, the checks are to “ensure security for the meeting.”
A special holiday was also declared during the ASEAN summit last year.
The AMM is expected to attract more foreign delegations than the summit, with groups from 25 countries travelling to Vientiane to participate in the meeting.
The government has also announced other measures to help ease traffic congestion during the meeting, such as paving side roads and clearing unused road construction material from Vientiane streets.
