I am going to Thailand for a year and would like to take my desktop mid-tower as carryon to keep it from getting destroyed as checked baggage. It will fit in a regular carry-on suitcase. Will the airlines let me do this or are they going to see it as some type of "terrorist device.?" I want to avoid breaking it down and packing each part if possible. Also, even though I will back up all my data, is there a risk of the Hard Drives being wiped going through x-ray?

after a move once where my hard disk went bollocks, what i do now is take out the hard disk and take it with me as carry on and pack well the est of the pc and sent it as lugagge. most other components of the pc can sustain serious shaking. and all can be replaced on the cheap. but your personal hard disk data no. removing and reinstalling the hard disk is very easy. i havent had any problems with x ray machines. for backup, i suggest you get yourself one of these harddisk-mp3 players http://www.archos.com. i use it to transfer gigabites of files from my pc in the office to home and viceversa. very easy and not that expensive.

I have often been asked to boot up a alp top, and have brought a portable (the old plug in toshibas) that was the size of a std tower. I would imagine you would have no prob, best to check first.

Smegma is exactly right. I have moved PCs all over the world and the hard drives are always taken out and put in carry-on. I usually put them in a full foam-padded case and even still literally hand-carry them - or in another words, I don't put them in a carry-on then roll/drag the carry-on luggage everywhere as this is just as bad due to the bumps/vibration. Aside from major forces (crushing), you can probably pack the rest of your tower in luggage, well padded, of course.

Chaps, I see no problem here - went THAI AIR a fortnight ago Beijing - Bangkok and had my Laptop - as well as at least one other passenger - not only with me, but operated it in flight - no probem whatsoever. Neither Beijing (outgoing) nor Bangkok (outgoing back) security check had any remark at hand on the laptop. It is different if you take a desktop - but laptop is okay!

When I have flown with a desktop, I have taken out the HD, Video Card and Memory, packed them in my carry-on and sent the rest of the unit bubble-wrapped in a suitcase. The problem is taking a monitor. If you must take a monitor, I suggest buying an LCD monitor and taking it. LCD monitors will survive rougher handling than conventional monitors, they weigh less and are easier to pack. Of course, the easiest way is to junk your desktop and buy a laptop.
