Hi Brothers,

Okay I am just looking for some advice and a reality check.

Last month I made a complete fool out of myself because for years I had been reading the Air Safety data wrong on China Airlines. Essentially I thought that they had only had 1 major and 1 minor accident since 1970. After that embarrassing event I went back and looked things over in the light of day.

China Airlines brought in a good crew from Singapore Airlines a couple of years ago and got to work ostensibly turning things around in the safety area. They also recently won a fairly prestigious safety award and the fleet has an average age of 5.1 years.

Now having said all this I am getting ready to fly again soon to BKK. China has a smoking deal coming up out of SFO and I feel better about them but I need some advice.

I have a lot of miles with China, I like them, and if I fly EVA or someone else I don't get the miles. Occassionally I like to fly Business Class but I am "cheap charlie" and China Air is a milage whore. I mean I just got 500 miles for taking their entertainment survey online (I hope they keep Asia Week Magazine).

Anyway please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Torq

BTW I did just read Sanook269's link on them being in the top worst in Asia...

My opinion... take the airline that gets you fastest, most comfortably and cheapest to BKK. If that is China Air, enjoy your trip.

Use to fly them a lot, service was good but after seeing one of there almost brand new 747's sitting in the middle of Hong Kong Harbour a few years back decided never again.

I am sure they have improved (otherwise they would not be still around) but many people have long memories! I fly a lot and am very choosey who I fly with, you only live once!

From my routings, Eva and China are pretty close in price, so I guess I could see myself flying either one.

Only a few airlines like Southwest and Qantas have managed to fly a lot of flights over a long time without killing anyone. The rest kill off a few every once in a while, even my old favorites like American Airlines and Japan Airlines. If I were you, I'd say go for it. What are the chances you'll die from something like this? Your taxi ride to the airport and just about anything you do in BKK is probably more likely to kill you than China Airlines. And hey, if you do die on a Chine Airlines flight, I can finally say I knew somebody who died in a plane crash.

Torq,
Cannot give you advice - BUT can give you my experience.
In all of my 55 years I had never before flown on China Airlines.
However about 20 days ago I got a very good deal from them on a return flight to Taipei and I decided to try them out.
I must say that I was very pleasantly suprised with the quality of service ( both ground and flight crew ), condition and cleanliness of the aircraft, the food, the comfort of the flight - in short GREAT.

P.S. Possibly most members know this already - BUT for those who don't : China Airlines is NOT a Mainland Chinese Airline BUT a Taiwanese Airline.

I've flown almost all the carriers from LAX to BKK, and now fly exclusively CI. Why? Prices are the best, you can book flights easily from their website and choose your seat online, their inflight service is quite good, food palatable, with my (only 50K at the time) mileage they even gave me a gold Dynasty card so I could hang in the airport lounge consuming food and drink for free. No problem booking an RT tikky with open return. They're usually on time too. I don't think they've crashed much lately.

Odd, what a nice confirmation.

You can safely ignore Sanook269's doom prophesies... I think he rather has some personal issues with China, as no thread mentioning CI passes, without him jumping in alleging all kinds of doom scenarios.

As I have said before, I fly them regularly, and have so far had no reason for complaints - while I had the worst flight of my life with Cathay, and a very nice travel experience with JAL.

I am flying again with China Airlines really soon, and am looking forward to it -- and the fact that they are NOT a mainland China airline is a great comfort to me.

But that's immaterial to their prices, and their service.

im flying hnl to bkk aug 25.

to harry: how far in advance does china air let you choose your seats. I called customer service and they told me it allowed choosing seats only the day before the flight.

Harold, that's right - you can choose your seat 24 hrs. or less before flight time - it's called "early check-in."

Yes - just get to the airport 3-4 hours before departure, or as I tend to do, 4-5 hours before departure. Make sure you sit in rows up to 42 (I think) in order to have access to in-flight laptop power and (if available) internet access.
