A bunch of times, I have used a taxi driver I know in Bangkok to take me to Chonburi, Pattaya etc. for the day. We have talked about going to Ayuttaya for the day to look around, but I never had the time. He is from Ayuttaya, has a new taxi, and speaks pretty good English. I think he would be a good for this trip. If you want his number, drop me a PM.

No problem.
Stop any taxi you see that looks to be a recent model which will have a smooth ride and good AC and give him a rate. I would guess all day round trip could be had for 2000THB easily.
I have paid 1000-1200THB for a trip 2 hrs north to Saraburi many times. That is just the one way... he leaves immediately.
You can rent a very nice car for 1500THB/day, but you would not have a driver. So the taxi should do the trick.
