Last month, leaving to head home, I took my seat on an Emirates flight leaving Bangkok and heading to Hong Kong. I was dozing off by the time we got in line to take off and as we were heading down the runway there was a loud noise (BOOM) and we hit the brakes. An engine had blown up! Flight Attendants were advised to take stations as we stopped and they were ready to have us hit the escape slides. Fire Engine pulled up and deemed we were safe enough to head back to terminal but far from any other planes! Scared the hell out of me. Then, they made us wait for 4 hours while they tried to fix the plane. I told the desk ladies that there was no way that they were fixing the plane unless they had a spare engine! Still made us wait, but then they were real efficient getting us on other flights to our destination. I have flown many miles but never had a problem like this before! Thank God the engine blew before we were too far down the runway to get stopped!!

Winner, What a story! I think that as it has happened, it was good luck it happened while you were on ground and nobody got hurt. I am sorry to hear about this incident and the delay you had while landing in BKK. A fellow bro in Pattaya told me a story of being forced to return to Dubai 2 hours before landing in BKK, due to a person who needed emergency care. He was delayed on landing in BKK a lot, too. The only funny thing was the guy next to him sleeping the whole trip, thinking they were to land in BKK while they were landing in Dubai again.

Winner, Lucky you the plane hadn't reached V1 speed or you would have had the thrill ride of your life. ÝAfter passing V1 the pilot is commited to continue rolling along the runway until reaching VR and then lifting the plane nose for takeoff. Pilots are trained for dealing with all kind of emergencies on takeoff -like a blown engine after passing V1, VR, or V2. However any emergency on the ground better happens before V1. After V1, the pilot must make all efforts to get the plane off the ground and then attempt and emergency landing thereafter. The most critical moment on a plane's flight is just after V1 and until the planes has gained enough altitude as to buy some time in case of an emergency An emergency landing with a plane fully loaded with fuel must be avoided if possible. Planes are not structurally designed to land with so much weight. Had the plane got of the ground, the pilot (if the emergency allows it) would keep the plane in the air for some time while dumping fuel before going for an emergency landing. BTW, V1 is the highest speed at which the pilot can decide to abort take off. Afterwards he is commited. VR is rotation speed -when the pilots pulls the nose up. And V2 is the actual speed at which the plane leaves the ground. As historical footnote, the Concorde accident of 2001 started with the puncture of a tire just instants after having passed V1. Rubber debris from the tire got into the engine intake and also ruptured the wing and the fuel tanks which spilling fuel over the hot engine exhausts started the fire. This happening after V1, the pilot had no choice but to try to get the plane of the ground -he knew something was terribly wrong -but not exactly what- and while fighting to get and keep the plane of the ground he received what must be one of the most terrifying radio calls a pilot can receive from the tower: "Concorde zero 4590, you have flames, you have flames behind you. It's burning badly." Chilli, the plane Winner was flying I do not believe was a 4 engines jumbo jet. Emirates only flies 2 engines B-777 and A330, A310.

Probably totally unrelated to winner's story but 2 weeks ago I was flying out of BKK on Emirates,B777. The plane was just being pushed off stand when the left hand engine stalled. We waited on board for a couple of hours whilst they carried out repairs, then off we went. I was sitting just forward of the engine and I swear I could hear some strange screaming noises. Maybe it was just me shitting myself. But I sure was glad to get off that f_cker.

i had this nice experience of two burning engines with malaysia airlines about 10 years ago. flying back to europe from KL i could see two 5-10 meter long flames coming out of the engines on th eright wing of a 747. nearly everybody was asleep but as i can never sleep on flights i noticed it. strangely enough nobodyelse got aware of the fire not even the cabin staff! so i informed the purser of that 'slight' problem they had. 2 minutes later the pilot came had a look at it and decided to dump all fuel on that side. this way shutting the engines off! i would have expected to have an emergency landing after two engines on fire, no way these bastards made a uturn over iran and flew back to malaysia with only two working engines!!! after three hours then came an announcement that due to heavy 'turbulences' (huh?) they had to return to malaysia. what a joke! after all flying about 10 hours and landing back where yoiu started, sucks! but the treatment afterwards was even better. no food or dinks provided in KL after heavy protests malaysian airlines at least assigned a shabby hotel room with some nice cockroaches, food and drinks i still had to pay for!!! their plan was to get the two engines changed and start the same evening again! of course this didn't happen! anyway, i bought a new ticket and flew out with SIA! needless to say that since then i never used malaysian airlines again!

I also have my own bad story. This one from about 5 years ago After taking off on a BA flight from Miami to London, I noticed the plane not climbing anymore after getting over the ocean, Ýand about a minute later then making a 180 degree turn. ÝNow we are flying towards the West?? ÝWhat the heck? ÝSilence. Pilot doesnt turn the lights on after take off as they do usually after a couple of minutes. ÝThen pilot comes over the intercom and in his best British extremely calmed voice says "We have a situation in the back of the plane that requires our most inmediate return to the airport. There is a little smoke in the back of the plane from an unknown source..... (a couple of "ahhh!!!" from other passengers) -at this moment I remembered the Valuejet flight that crashed due to fire after takeoff from Miami a couple of years earlier-...... We must land the plane inmediately. ÝHowever, these planes are not designed to land fully loaded with fuel. Consequently we will fly over the everglades .... (then I remembered the Eastern flight that crashed in the everglades at night and the survivors spending the night in cold water being bitten by all kind of things-.... for a few minutes dumping fuel as long as the smoke situation doesnt deteriorate. When we land, you will see many firefighter trucks and ambulances running along the plane. ÝDo not be alarmed. It is normal emergency landing procedure" (ugh? Ýwhat is a "normal emergency"?) Besides the announcement from the captain, there was no way to tell there was something wrong (well, I was not in the back of the plane so I do not know how things were there). With the plane flying steady, and remembereing the crash of the JAL 747 in Japan when the plane flew like on a roller coaster for about 30 minutes before crashing and remembering what many of the people there did -all died except 3 who survived(all seated next to each other), I decided -just in case- to do the same many of the people of that flight did: write a farewell letter to my daughter. At the end nothing happened. It was a very uneventful emergency. ÝLanding very normal, except for the sight of all the flashing lights outside. ÝThe worst parts of the whole adventure were yet to come -having formally departed the USA, inmigration put us all in an isolated area where there was nothing do -no drinks no food nothing. after a few hours the crew felt bad, went inside the plane and got some drinks for the passengers. Ý Once we got going, we didnt make it to London. We had to land somewhere -the airport further to the west in England -if continuing to fly the crew would exceed the hours allowed per shift ÝFrom there we were taken in buses to London. This was the thing that really made the whole thing a bad bad experience. I figure they would have been able when leaving Miami to count the hours and figure this out -maybe they were putting their hopes on the jet-stream. I think that once they knew this was going to happen, BA could have sent a relief crew to wait for the plane and we could have taken off after just a crew replacement. BTW, what was the whole thing about? ÝA faulty air condition unit that could not be repaired after a few hours, so it was disconnected and we went on back on the plane with 2 a/c units working instead of the usual 3.
