Hi!
I am soon going too LOS again and earlier I have been flying and renting a car to get around, but I was thinking maybe on using more train this time to relax more and see more of the landscape. Also when traveling long distance get a Class A sleeping cabin. Anybody used sleeping cabins and how are the standard etc? Any other point of views as well?

I have travelled from Bangkok up to Chiang Mai and down to Had Yai on trains.The sleeper trains are pretty comfortable and value for money. The main problem is that on the long journeys the majority of your travelling time is done at night so you don't get to see that much.
Also up north a lot of the track is through cuttings in Mountains so again your view of the countryside is restricted.

Being fond of trains, I had the same inkling as the OP. So far I've only taken the sleeper as far as Hua Hin. But from what I can tell by looking at the train schedules, it appears that all the fast and comfy trains are sent out either late at night or early, early in the AM- so you rarely get any good views of the surroundings and loose all sense of place you're after in the first place.
All the traffic during mid-day is freight of passenger trains that seem to stop every Klick or two at all the rural stations.

Thai train first class is not the same as airline first class. First class is only for the sleeping quarters: small private cabin, bench/couch that converts to upper lower bunks and a sink. Everything else is the same for everybody. You can order food from the dining car and have it delivered to your cabin, you have to pay for this. The food is generally not very good. A stewart will come around selling cold beers from a bucket filled with beer and ice.

Food is what you would expect,so so. You get a prepacked breakfast provided in first class on overnight journeys.
Another point to take note of is that the beds are not designed for anyone over 5' 7"... If you are tall you are in for a cramped night.

I got this info from a website something like http://www.thairail.com about 3 months ago.
There is a train that departs BKK daily for Chiang Mai.
13 Timetable....Sprinter #009 departs BKK 8.30am and
arrives Chiang Mai 7.45pm, 2nd class.
14 Timetable....Sprinter #012 departs Chiang Mai
8.30am arrives BKK 8.05pm, 2nd class.
It has air con and will cost US$48 return. I do not know about meals, drinks, topless waitressess, blow jobs or a mobile MP but if there is let us know.
The day trip should be good. Maybe even you can jump off the train at a town, stay the night and rejoin the train the next day or so. This may be the way I will go when heading north.

I will be going to the north east on a night train, and I checked the http://www.railway.co.th/httpEng/ and no sign of any MP there so guess I need to go downtown Bangkok and see if there is any FL that "love trains and me"  and wanna come on a short trip. The welcome comitte will be at the station so it will be only an up/and down for the trainlover from BKK or T/R as it is called. I am 180cm approx 6 feet so sleeping could be a challange but nothing that some beer can cure. I see the first class trains have 2 beds in 1 coupe, but not much space as always in trains, but the price is ok. Maybe an idea for the BKK comunity is to rent a hole car with 12 rooms and go on a trip somewhere! Anyway I think this upcoming trip will be very intresting and maybe give some FR as well. If the food is not much I sure get the ladies in the kitchen at my hotel make something for me too bring with me (not to be cheap) so I know I like it!

Barrafish.Sounds a good trip, I've never looked at day time travel before.If only 2nd class is available I would take some sort of cushion with you as the seats are pretty basic.

Just got back from LOS. I did the overnite from BKK to CM. I booked late so no 1st class available. Only 2nd class cattle car sleepers at that time (20 rows of bunk beds on either side). I left on the 730pm overnite. The train was rather old. The bathroom was very dirty and disgusting. The bed was OK but rather small (as described by others). Although the train leaves on time (so dont be late), the train arrived in CM almost 2 hours late. And I heard this was very common.
