Is it OK to bring GPS device into the contry?
Anyone tried that?

Same as bringing your own toaster. If one is ok, then the other one also is.

So lets ask again; is it ok to bring your own toaster device into the country? anyone tried that?

What about your own blender? And what about your own walkman type MP3 player?

I have a Garmin GPS III. I never stopped at customs to ask if it was ok. So, I do not really know for sure what they will say if I ask. But so far not asking has worked for me.

Difference between a toaster and a GPS devices is that GPS device is a military equipment that potentially can be used to call in air strikes ( GPS satellite system was designed for that purpose). Toaster can only be used as a weapon if you trow it in someone's direction. Some countries don't allow GPS devices to be imported without license ( Russia for example). I never heard of anyone getting in trouble over that, but theoretically that's possible. I just got GARMIN GPS V on eBay for $300.

A knife is also military equipment and binoculars as well-also used by spotters to call air strikes (bird watchers also use them)

Boots are also military equipment as soldiers calling the air strikes also wear them.

Water purification tablets are also military equipment, etc.

C'mon... use your common sense. We are not talking of Iraq or Burma where you can not bring your own mobile phone. In most places the common sense criteria defining it is if it the device can be lethal by itself (like a handgun). So unless you hammer the GPS down the occipital, I doubt you can do much more damage with it.

Hi Smeg!!

Actually he makes a decent point.

Once, when I was at Doi Inthanon, I was taking pictures of the 'Highest Point in Thailand' sign, when an Royal Thai Air Force guy politely asked me to point my camera AWAY from the base next to the park.

A GPS can be used to make very accurate maps of military installations, and could be banned according to law.

I agree that nobody will ask you at customs, but if you are wandering around the countryside, and happen upon a military installation, it might get some scrutiny...

I'm sure it's not like Russia, where a US citizen, working for Qualcomm got thrown in the kook, but who knows?

BTW, Grandma's better, in case you wondered

Yes, yes, yes. But no.

The fact that something electronic could be used for something else is not in general the determining factor any longer. As Ýt the end, all electronic gadgets are made of the same basic components. There is no magic as such as to what the device is. I could go buy the components one by one here in BKK and make my own GPS. It will be an ugly f_cker, but it would work ok.

Anyway, technically I do not know the answer. But my GPS has travelled with me for over 4 years to many countries in 4 continents. I never asked -but yes, I like risks. However, if really interested in a valid answer, I would never rely on what a stranger tells me on a forum. Whatever the answer might be.

For a valid answer go to the people who know:

BTW, glad to hear that Grandma is doing fine. I wouldn't mind a PM to know more about how the ordeal evolved.

Anybody interested, let me know and I could maybe post or send by PM coordinates for some good Thai waypoints to input in your GPS. I think I may still have them -though my BKK screen was becoming too crowded and may have deleted a few.

Mr. Smegma-

When one carries the GPS, does one actually know where they are? Is it true this device actually shows you you're place in the universe? MMM, maybe this is the THING I've been seeking..... fire the therapist.... no more whoring.

Ok, back to the thread. Smegma, I brought my saxaphone from Bangkok to Japan. The saxaphone was designed for the French military, ( yup, thanks France!), Therefore may be construed as military equipment as well. While I have the ability to make dogs howl, I've yet to call in an airstrike with my saxaphone, though the "potential" is probably there. I can't make toast with it, though I could probably get a bottle of beer opened with it if I tried hard enough. Likewise I suppose that if one were beat bloody about the head with my saxaphone it could be considered a weapon.

Gosh, if common sense dictates anything, it's to stop writing now. As usual Smegma, you've got me way confused. Oh yeah, the question. Given the above information, why was my military equipment allowed on the plane?

And Mr. Sup- Glad Grandma is feeling better.

TWD, you are starting to run the risk of me eventually liking you. I am getting a feel for that already. Are you sure you want to go down this road? One Ýthat may lead to perdition, ie me liking you a bit as a result of your posts?

BTW, having military equipment allowed on the plane doesn't mean it will be allowed in the country. Planes carry many things that are not allowed in some places (starting with your basic alcoholic drinks). Before airlines stopped allowing bringing nail cleapers on planes, country specific import restrictions used to be more stringent than what planes allowed on board.

Smeg...... oh man of knowledge.

Again you have put uncertainty and questions into my mind.

I understand that my nail scissors can be seized at security check since they could be seen as a weapon, so must be carried in check-in luggage. No problem

But should I declare my electric razer to customs? I know it is not a toaster or GPS. Any advise?
