I've got about 150,000 FF milers with NW Airlines but am having difficlty using them for upgrades. In june, 05 was quoted USD $2,500 for a Dec. 05, flight so went with EVA for about $1,200. Anyway NWA says always popular route from USA West Coast to BKK/rtn and so the seats in first are never available. So decide to make reservations now for later this year then plenty of seats in first class to upgrade. NWA air quoted me $1,700 for seats in economy that are upgradeable. Been paying between $900 and $1,200 for these seats up until Dec last year. NWA actually charges more for upgradeable seats, more than for regular economy, in order to use my miles for upgrade. Seems kind of chicken shit. Anybody have similiar experiences with NWA or other airlines charging more for these tickets? Maybe I am in new territory and I am just not aware of a common tactic used by airlines.

I have noticed that some other airlines have also figured out how to cheat customers out of the frequent flier miles. For example, Delta airlines SkySaver awards for travel within the US require 25,000 miles. These awards are supposed to be “somewhat” limited as to how many award seats are available for each flight, but I found that they are never available for the vast majority of Delta flights (except for short commuter flights on propeller planes). I checked the Delta schedules for varies times up to one year in advance, and still no SkySaver seats available. But there were plenty of seats available for SkyChoice awards, which require double the miles (50,000 miles). I had no problem getting a flight on United Airlines using my Mileage Plus award miles to travel within the US for only 25,000 miles, even during the busy holiday season.

Mr Alan is right. I just tried to cash in my miles for a domestic flight and of course, nothing but this damn Sky Choice available. I tried different locations, times (1 year in advance), etc.. and nothing. What the hell is the point if you can't ever use the Sky Saver method. Well, I decided to just bite the bullet and cashed in the double miles, which I think is bs. So there's 50,000 miles to just fly coast to coast. I haven't done any research yet, but definitely going to switch to another program. This new commercial for the Capital One Visa with no blackout dates sounds interesting, but then again, no miles for the amount of miles you fly.

I fly monthly from London to BKK and I've found Emirates has the best frequent flyer program. With BA and KLM you can never get a flight on miles unless you book the day before. On Emirates I've rarely had a problem with upgrades or flights for my family.

NW is trying to arrange a merger with Delta but it looks like the KLM ownership will prevent that.
