Hi Guys,

any advice or experiences?

Me and the misses are planning our first trip back since she arrived in the states July '05 and I wanted to spend 2 or 3 nights in Tokyo or Hong Kong.

we hope to travel in november 2006 and spend about 18 days (depending on our work schedules)

I called a travel agent and was quoted over $3000US per ticket with a 3 day layover in Tokyo (on the flight over) and return flight from BKK to LA with one stop.

My queries are:

1. whats a accurate price range for direct flights from BKK to HK or Tokyo?

2. Do those "2-3 day getaways" still exist in the Bangkok Post and Nation? (I seem to remember 2n/3d to HK at about $300us)

3. will the old lady have any problem with immigration in Tokyo/HK while traveling on an American Greencard?

4. opinions on which city is better for restaurants, drinking, general people watching, and all around vibe?

any help or similiar experiences is appreciated!

BK - I will be sure to contibute many, many adult beverages and some baht when we do make it. My CC is locked away until its paid off

Ckok Dee,
ATL

Use this website to book your tickets to BKK. I know they allow free stopovers in Tokyo with JAL.

You should check with the Japan Immigration if they will allow your misses into the country holding a Thai Passport with a USA Visa.

I can answer this, She will need a visa to stay in Japan.

US Green card may make it easier to obtain a visa.

Normal flights Tokyo to BKK are about 600$US, but CAN if plan far enough ahead, get a ticket for about 350$US.

I love Tokyo these days, expensive, but fun.

Absolutely will need a Visa in both China and Japan. She is a Thai Citizen and will require the necessary documentation for her home country. Will not have any luck getting into Japan on a Green Card. Until she is a U.S. citizen with U.S. passport she will not have the same privileges when travelling to countries with agreements with the U.S. Her Green Card allows her to enter the U.S. freely but thats about all.

I strongly suggest that anyone booking a ticket to Asia call one of these consolidators, might save you some bucks.

thanks guys,

I PM'ed you wai and the site is worth checking out..offering flights from LA to BKK for less than $600 after tax that time of year.

I will check on getting a tourist visa. If its too difficult I will take a 2 night holiday while the lady stays with her family up north..bummer

Kidding but I definitly want to check out tokyo on this trip since it maybe another year before I get back.

I have already agreed to fly her to trat/ko chang after she spends a good week and half with the folks/brothers/cousins...I said I would stay up north for 3 or 4 days and then I need to visit mates etc...

thanks for the advice!!!!

If you possibly can, visit Kyoto - it's a fascinating place culturally.
I would second this opinion. In fact, I would go one step further and suggest that you connect at Osaka Kansai Airport (KIX) instead of Tokyo Narita.
http://www.kansai-airport.or.jp/english/index.htm

Then take the railway to Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. You can take the Airport Express "Haruka" to Kyoto (73 minutes) on JR West railway (departs right from the KIX airport terminal).
http://www.westjr.co.jp/english/global.html

Then you can stay at the Hotel Granvia Kyoto, which is connected to the Kyoto Train station, and one of the most amazing modern architectural structures in the world (along with the attached shopping center). Rates are about $150 per night for a double, but worth it.

While in Kyoto visit some of the 17 World Heritage Sites that are located in Kyoto (off-limits to Allied bombing in WWII) :

This would be perfect for a 2-3 day trip, because you will spend less time getting to and from the airport than even you would in Tokyo (it is a long boring bus ride from Narita to Tokyo). A trip to Kyoto is a perfect blend of ancient and modern that will put Tokyo to shame.

cheers,

I will definitly consider Kyoto..by what you said I think if the old lady can get a visa she would enjoy that more so than Tokyo.

I myself desire to experience the engery of tokyo..from what I understand they have mastered the art of urban living...but then again I am also intrigued (sp?) with the cultural aspect that Kyoto would have.

I have a lots of time to decide!

thanks again for the input.

Kyoto is not just a bunch of ancient shrines. In many ways it is more modern than Tokyo.

Kyoto has a subway, ultra modern buildings, tons of shopping and food. Tokyo is basically a lot of boring architecture for as far as the eye can see. I don't go to Tokyo unless I have some business reason to be there.
