Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 23 October 2007 :- Jetstar considering Bangkok as Asian hub =============================== Jetstar Airways, the budget carrier wholly owned by Australia's Qantas Group, is weighing Bangkok against four other Asian cities as its potential regional hub for planned long-haul flights to Europe. It is also considering Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City as its intermediate hub to carry passengers from Australia onward to Europe and back. Jetstar wants an Asian hub as it strives to expand scheduled services to five European cities, including Athens, Rome, Paris, Munich, Amsterdam and Milan, Bruce Buchanan, a group general manager at Jetstar said in Bangkok yesterday. The high aircraft turnaround charges imposed at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which are twice as much as at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Singapore's Changi Airport, are an obstacle for Jetstar making Bangkok its Asian hub, he said. However, discussions on a possible reduction in airport costs with Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT), which operates Suvarnabhumi along with five other major Thai airports, have been going on for months. ''We need to make sure that if we operated out of Bangkok to Europe, Bangkok offers as competitive a proposition as Kuala Lumpur and Changi,'' he said. Jetstar is looking at airport costs as it looks to compete with other budget carriers that offer long-haul services from Asia to Europe, such as Malaysia's AirAsia X. KLIA and Changi have lower airport costs because both operate terminals dedicated to low-cost carriers. Jetstar is trying to convince AoT that the economic benefits Jetstar passengers would bring to Thailand would be far greater than the concessions AoT would provide to the airline. Nevertheless, Bangkok does offer several positive advantages for Jetstar. It's closer to Europe, can facilitate Jetstar's long-haul and short-haul operations and can house Jetstar's international crew, which involves more than 100 cabin attendants, he added. Jetstar flies three times a week between Melbourne and Bangkok and three times per week on the Sydney-Phuket routes. Its sister carrier, Singapore-based Jetstar Asia, operates two daily Singapore-Bangkok flights and six weekly flights between Singapore and Phuket. The Jetstar executive said the airline would need to make a decision on where it will place its Asian hub in December this year. Mr Buchanan did not expect AoT to make a quick decision on a potential discount. ''If not (Bangkok), we start somewhere else. But that does not mean that we are not going to operate through Bangkok (for European routes) in the future,'' he said. Jetstar originally planned to begin offering its two-stage international long-haul service from Australia to southern Europe through the Asian hub late next year, but the six-month delay in the delivery of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft will push the launch back to around mid-2009.

This Jetstar Asia blows Air Asia away. New planes, on-time, generous baggage allowance. Certainly my preferred carrier for BKK-SIN route.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 29 March 2008 :- Jetstar suspends Phuket flights ======================== Jetstar Asia Airways, the Singapore-based offshoot of the Qantas budget carrier Jetstar Airways, today is suspending all flights from Singapore to Phuket. The carrier reportedly is having trouble filling seats to Phuket and wants to use the aircraft capacity on other Asian routes that offer better opportunities. Its afternoon arrival schedule on the southern Thai resort island is also considered unpopular among many travellers who prefer the better time slots of rivals such as Tiger Airways. The approach of the low tourism season in Phuket, between April and September, was cited as another reason for Jetstar's decision. Jetstar Asia operated six flights a week on the Singapore-Phuket route, using an Airbus A320 that can carry 180 passengers. It is shifting capacity to other sectors, such Singapore-Medan, which is due to inaugurated tomorrow, and Ho Chi Minh City where frequencies will be doubled to two flights a day, as well as new flights to Macau.Jetstar Asia executives described the suspension of Singapore-Phuket flights as temporarily, though they did not say when the flights might resume. However, Jetstar Asia's twice-daily services between Bangkok and Singapore remain intact as sales have been good. Its affiliate Jetstar also continues to fly three times a week on the Sydney-Phuket route, and has three flights a week between Melbourne and Bangkok. Wichai Nurnlop, general manager of Phuket International Airport, said yesterday that Phuket remained a key port of call for many international carriers. Flights through Phuket for the summer season, running from April to September, are increasing by 10% over the same period last year, he said. In the winter schedule that ends this month, aircraft movements through Phuket rose 27% year-on-year. Passenger traffic is approaching the airport's capacity of 6.5 million passengers. Based on the current projections of 5-10% annual growth, airport officials say overcrowding looms in one or two years and capacity needs to be upgraded.

I flew the SIN-BKK route last month, my Jetstar experience definitely 'blew'. Departure from SIN delayed nearly 3hrs, cramp seating, no mileage program. Checked baggage and extra leg room seating available at additional cost. Return flight from BKK delayed over an hour.

Baba, Jetstar are shit. A budget airline - say no more. I booked a seat with them to Bangkok on the internet and my credit card got charged twice. It took 3 months for them to credit the overcharged amount. Customer service is not in their dictionary And forget ringing them in the weekend for help. You get re-routed to a call centre in India and they can do jack-shit to assist. I ended up swearing at them down the phone as they were so incompetent. I would usually regret doing so after the event...not so with Jetstar

Jetstar has a very high level of dissatisfaction from passengers using its sevices. I was told that I could not expect a refund for a cancelled ticket for 5-6 weeks which I thought too much of a delay, but it took 11 weeks and 3 additional phone calls before I received the refund.

Met a bunch of drunk Jetstar Srewardesses one night in a BK club - no wonder people don't like the airline if they were anything to go by. I remember looking and talking to several of the slappers and thinking to myself... that is why God created Thai women.
