Fastest and safest is probably by airplane. Price for a return ticket is about 4500 Baht and the actual flight is 55 minutes. For the braver ones you could try a bus. Most travel overnight, prices depending on luxury I think from 300 to 600 Baht. And if you have all the time of the world you could consider te train, cheaper than the bus I think. Have a safe trip.

... or you want to try something different, try the overnight train... *cheap* but you must make reservations... ... Here's a page with the schedule and fares... 2nd class sleeper is quite acceptable... http://northernthailand.com/cm/travel/train.html

tried it once from Chiangmai to Bangkok but the beds are short and it would be inconvenient to sleep if you are over 6' in height. also tried the limo service from Don Muang to Chiangmai (missed the nightime flight) and it cost me Baht 10K (discounted to Baht 9.5K). Car left Don Muang at 10:30pm and reached CM at 6:00am-very safe drivers.

I've had the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and it was quite nice. Leaves late afternoon, someone comes around later to take order for dinner and then you'll have a nice sleep and wake up close to Chiang Mai. Was ~ 850B one way. The train tracks and sleeper carriage are in quite good condition. Someone once said half the fun is getting there and I felt comfortable the whole trip. There are usually a good number of farang tourists in the aircon sleepers too, so you can have some nice chats. Only items I'd call required.. 1) A good book (or Mp3 player) after it gets dark and there is no more scenery or no one to talk to. 2) Sufficient small change for meals, drinks, etc 3) A bicycle style chain to tie down your bag/suitcase. There have been reports of bag going missing - personally I never had a problem. It's much cheaper than flying and much more comforable than the bus... But then it's "up to you"

Guys thanks for the valuable travel tips. I have two questions about the train services. Are the sleepers like cabins? If the answer is no, is a sleeper big enough for two people?

No probs. The short answer to your question is "no" and "maybe". The slightly more longer version goes like this: The sleepers are more like a dorm room setup with bunk beds, they fold everything down in the evening and all you have is a curtain (hint: get the lower sleeper, much easier to get in/out). As for your second question, you may be able to fit your TG, but you will have to book one per person. Don't try the "..but we where going to share one" trick, it won't fly and will be hightly!! frowned upon by the train staff. But if you have booked two seats and manage to spend some "private time" together (without getting caught)... good luck.

hi mr pink, maybe this helps, train first class is with aircon, 2 beds in a cabin and you can turn the a/c on or off. second class is with aircon or fan, you can not adjust them. so i prefer the fan, as aircon can get quite cold overnight. ( i am cold quickly, maybe this doesnt bother you.) all in all i like the train alot. about the bus, see invaderzims fr. buxeda
