OK..so technically I'm not a newbie since I've been to LOS in the past, (instead of "newbie" maybe "longie"?)
Anyway I recently did my flight and hotel booking online and found a couple of sites which may be of interest to first timers as well as regulars.

www.skyauction.com

-I managed to get a sweet deal here. As the name implies it's an auction site. Basically the folks at the Skyauction travel agency manage to offer a limited number of flights, hotels, vacation packages, etc. at reduced rates. Many times much much lower than the airline's advertised rates. But the caveat is is that it's an auction site like Ebay. So you can be "outbid" if you don't pay close attention to the auction, and your results may vary from other winners.
For example, I won the auction that was offering tickets to BKK. I landed a sweet deal/price of $750 plus tax round trip airfare from Norfolk to Bangkok. In total the price came out to $845. Not a bad deal at all.  But as mentioned, your results will vary. Plus some airports charge an extra fee on top of your winning bid. I was originally going to fly out of Raleigh, but those greedy hounds were going to charge I believe a $200 surcharge which would've brought the fare to $1045. Still not a bad price, but changing my plans to fly out of Norfolk saved me $200. That's a few more ST's/LT's I can get in LOS.
Another thing to be aware of when using Skyauction is that the tickets are non-refundable, non-transferable. Just something to keep in mind when making your travel plans. Plus the tickets you are issued are E-tickets, but, at least with Northwest Airlines who I'll be flying with, you can get paper tickets issued to you for a fee. Northwest Air charges $25.
All in all I think I made a good choice and got a sweet deal with these guys and will definitely be using them again in the future. At least as my first option when making flight plans. Highly recommended!

Thailand Hotel Network (Asia Web Direct)
http://www.bangkok-hotel.net/
When I made my hotel reservation at the Manhattan Hotel, I got another good deal with the folks here at bangkok-hotel.net. They offer many discounted rates at the hotels in BKK. I got a good rate at the Manhattan of 870 bhat a night/standard twin room.
When you book through them they will charge your card 5% of the booking value or 500 bhat, whichever is higher. The remaining balance will be collected 7 days before you check in. If you make a cancellation within 7 days of arrival you'll get charged for one night, so if you need to cancel try to do so well ahead in advance.
After you make your hotel reservations they give you the option of hiring a limo service to pick you up from the airport for about $15-$20. I know it's easy to get a cab from the airport but I said "to hell with it" and went for the limo service. I figured it's a good way to kick off a week of in LOS.
Oct. 2nd can not get here fast enough!!
