Hi chaps, Mr alan brought to my attention in one of my other posts about this type of visa. I'm looking to come to los early november leaving early january. I'm a UK resident, 8 weeks is the perfect amount of time for me in los, I wanna see out the new year over there. From looking at the Thai embassy website, it would seem the 60 day tourist visa is the best option. I have a question: I was thinking of just getting a single way flight out there. It gives me flexability, to come back earlier, if for some reason I wanted too. I have the impression that the powers that be, want you to book a return ticket as proof that you will not be overstaying. If I have to book a return then I guess I will I don't want to get a visa-on-arrival, and then apply for an extension, i'm not bothered with the hassle of it, I want to sort everything out there before I come over. So how will this work guys, will I be able to book a single way ticket, or do I need to get a return.? Thanks

I would book a round trip flight for the maximum amount of time you want to stay (no longer than 60 days). Round trip tickets are usually cheaper than two one-way tickets. But make sure and find out what the fee would be if you want to change your return ticket date.

One other point. Somone buying a one-way ticket is going to be subjected to much greater scrutiny from security\customs\immigration than passengers with round trip tickets. History has shown that suicide bombers usually purchase one-way tickets (for obvious reasons).

Hey Mr Alan, i've been looking at this and it seems alot of hassle. I was assuming that if I went to the effort of obtaining and being aproved for a 60 day visa, as well as being a valid british passport holder & resident, that it wouldn't be as bigger deal as this. Alot of flights are non changeable with the major airliners, and those that do charge a penatly fee. Do you really think, I should not just go for a single way ticket? I just like freedom of flexability thats all Thanks

Most airlines do allow you to change the return flight if you pay a change fee. And it still may be cheaper to pay the change fee (return flight only) on a round trip ticket, as compared to two one-way tickets. Again, you need to do the research on this. I am not sure if you will have a problem entering Thailand even with a 60 day visa if you don't have a return ticket. You probably need to get more information on this. This is going to be your main consideration, because you don't want to land in Thailand and be denied entry because you don't have a return ticket.

And the 60 day visa can be extended for another 30 days at the immigration office at Suan Plu (Bangkok). If you come at the right time it'll take you not more than an hour. The general experience is that if you have a visa (not an visa exempt aka visa on arrival) you wouldn't have any problem if you're traveling on a one way ticket. You can always say you will travel onwards and return from another country. Bur remember the official rule is that you have to have a return ticket in hand when arriving in Thailand.
I don't want to get a visa-on-arrival, and then apply for an extension
That would give you only 37 days and you'll need a visa run at least twice. Visa issues are discussed extensively on Thai Visa.

I don't understand. He only wants to stay 8 weeks max. A 60 days tourist visa, or visa on arrival with one visa run should be enough.

Yep. had 90 days in mind... it's only 60 days.... one VOA, one extension and one visa run. If within 60 days no extension needed too.

You'll need a return ticket. Most airlines won't even let you on the plane in UK if you cannot show that you will be returning.
