Every time I travel, no matter where it happens to be, I think of myself as a pretty good packer....

Although, not absurdly anal like Jack Nicholson's character in "As Good as it Gets"

but I do like to go over very light and usually come back with an extra bag or backpack filled. The usual rule of thumb is pack your stuff then cut it in half.....

I am glad that mrs atl is the same way, as I have had former GF's that were worse than the gay guy in this hilarious 25 second movie clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbXarsr1hyo

One tip I have is I usually bring an oversized backpack and roll my cloths up as it really saves a ton of room as opposed to folding...obviously you cant do this with biz suits/shirts, but aside from that it is a great method....

Obviously, another one, that I am sure everyone does, is pack trial size stuff (shampoo's, deodorant etc)

Just curious if you guys have any tips that can reduce bulk...

cheers,

atl

Leave the Thai girl in America! You can always find a new one in LOS (or two or three). That should save you at least 120 pounds.

Pack your trial size toiletries (including condoms) in your shoes.

Last trip Thai wife wanted to bring back about 50 pounds of rice. Obviously I would have paid through the nose if I had checked that so I packed in a rolled carryon and placed it in the overhead bin. They do not weigh those.

Carry a flash drive around your neck everywhere you go with a copy of all your documents. Passport, tickets..etc.

First picture in your digital camera should be a picture of your name and address. If you lose the card or the camera the first picture anyone would see is how to contact you if they were so inclined to return the camera or memory card.

Does it not get a little exspensive to cut all your clothes in half every time you travel?

And then the bugger that finds/steals it will know you are on holiday and get his mate to rob your house as he knows no one will be at home!!

And leave no doubt with Mr. Customs Man who took those X rated photos that fill the rest of the memory card

And you could wear that buisness suit (on vacation?) on the hour 18 flight, also good practice for being uncomfortable as hell when you get to the steamy stink of BKK

I found a memory card in an airport once with some family photos I am sure the photographer would love to have back but there was no information. I'm married to a Thai girl so I would NEVER bring home evidence. That's insane! I keep the memories safely locked away in my guilt locker. What about a compromise and just take a picture of your email address.

There was a story in the news recently about someone who had stolen a camera getting arrested thanks to the Internet. It seems they had stolen a camera that had some type of built in wi-fi capability. You could snap pictures all day and when the camera detected an open wi-fi spot it would automatically email the pictures to the stored email in the software. They were taking pictures all over the place and emailing photos to the victim. Just goes to show that criminals are DUMB.

555, good point but when the in-laws pick me up at the airport, as is the case normally, it may be a bit awkward explaining why their daughter isnt with me

kidding, this trip I am travelling 102 pounds lighter since mrs atl is sitting this one out and awaiting our summer trip...

and Lowry, nice point as the t-shirts cut in half do look a little bit gay on me....Silom Soi 4 here I come

Leave the toiletries at home. Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. is all way cheaper at any 7-11 on Sukhumvit. Bring only one pair of shoes.

Check out Eagle Creek for ways to compact your stuff further.

If your itinerary does not require business suits, shirts, shoes, and ties, or the need to patronise establishments with conservative dress codes, the dedicated minimalist can reduce his luggage to an overnight bag weighing about 9 kg.

All you REALLY need is one change of clothes, toiletries in containers of just sufficient size to last the duration of your trip, travel documents and information,a credit card,cash/travellers`cheques,a book that you know you ought to read but have not found the time for,a collapsible umbrella if you are going to travel when rain can be reasonably expected, rubber thongs for the hotel room or when it is too wet for other footwear,a wide brimmed hat for hot climates,2 t-shirts just in case your spare shirt has not been returned from the laundry,a small digital camera if you think there is one person, other than yourself, who might be interested in any photos you take, and a small laptop if business or your addiction to the internet makes it a necessity.

I confess that this list is compiled with a hot climate, such as Thailand,in mind.If your itinerary also includes a cold climate then you will need a warm coat, gloves, hat and shoes which will increase the weight to maybe 18-20 kg,and require an additional and perhaps larger overnight bag.
