As much as I love going to LOS I dread the long flight. I am going to my doctor before I fly to get a prescription for a sleep aid or something to help me relax on the flight. Anyone have any suggestions? A coworker of mine suggested adavan(sp?). Tried gravol before but really didnt do anything.

Much of it depends on you and how your body reacts to certain medications.

Adavan is a common, old style (and highly effective) anti-anxiety type medication. Works great for stress and really does mellow you out. Valium, while more of a muscle relaxer does a similar job by transforming one into a physical marshmallow.

Both will generally take the edge off in a big way and also help you sleep comfortably.

From time to time I use sleeping pills like Lunestra, Ambien, etc and they work to sleep but do not take out any of the anxiety (which I do not have with flying long distances). If anxiety is the dominant issue, then going with the adavan type solution is a good fit. It may leave you a little cloudy for a few hours after it wears off but that passes.

Ask your doc about beta blockers also. Generally less addictive than anti-anxiety/anti-depressants and can be great for taking the edge off PLUS leaving you fairly sharp minded as well (where's the fun in that?)

visitingbkk pretty much sums it up, but I would just add that I sometimes take some Tramedol as well, a painkiller that can be purchased in most any BKK pharmacy. I find long flights more of a pain in the ass than anxiety producing. Tram leaves me a little spacey the next day though. Valium helps me to sleep and wears off more quickly. I would probably take Ambien for a long flight, but since I like to drink I don't want to wake and find out that I tried to break into the cockpit.

I hate flying also, which has funny got worse as time marches on, and not the other way round.

I always combat that by fixing in my mind the bronze arsehole of a Tulip (or similar) lady - instantly takes my mind off the flight and reminds me why I am stuck in a capsule 38,000 feet in the air.

Not connected with anxiety, and on a serious note, there is a New Zealand produced drug called "No Jet Lag" which is herbal, but for me, it actually works. You take it every few hours and it calms the body and helps adjust it for the time difference. Whenever I have used it, I have arrived fresh and ready to go....

I know my drugs.

Quim raises a good point about the new sleep aids, some people behave rather poorly on them in what amounts to a chemical induced sleep walking episode. While not common, certainly would be an unpleasant situation were this to happen.

As for herbals.. like pharmas, they work differently with people. Arnica and Chamomile (two of the ingredients of No Jet Lag) are well known for their relaxing/calming effects. Melatonin is another one many swear by. You could pick up these items in any health food (or major pharmacy) and try for a few days to see if they work for you.

Nortriptyline is an anti-depressant that is also used off label for pain, anxiety, etc. Again, this is an old style med and generally does not have the same negative effects of newer SSRI meds that can takes days to work and, for some, have very bad side effects.

Adavan still seems like the best option given what you have said so far.

Hate flying so Zanax or Thai derivative from pharmacy close to Bully's on Suk. Helps me sleep most of the trip sometimes I take two but it does take a day to wear off.
And someone somewhere told me that Viagra helps for jet lag so I take half of one before I go out first day. Buy at the same place.

Well funny last two times it hasnt "kicked in" until I was getting some attention. But once that has started there is no turning back.

I think it does help the jet lag.
