Here is my situation I have a Thai Tourist visa with a Number of entry stamped 2. The visa was issued at Chicago Consulate on 14 Mar 2011. Enter before stamped is 13 Sep 2011. I have a round trip flight ticket April 8, 2011-Oct 1, 2011. I will land in Bangkok on April 9, 2011. Do I expect any problem at the immigration becuase my return ticket is 6 months in the future? Should I buy a round trip for Penang or Singapore departing Thailand around July 6-8, 2011 (3 months in the future) ? What is the best place to get a Thai visa, Pennang or Singapore for a US passport holder? Any suggestion about how to stay for the duration (March 9-Oct 1) without making multiple trips to other countries or enrolling in a language school? Thanks for your feedbacks.

You've got no problems. Your first stamp is used when you get here, and that covers you for 60 days, then you go to immigration, and get a visa extension for 30 day for bt1900. At this point you have to do a border run to go out of the country, and come back in to use your second visa stamp, for another 60 day, with a 30 day extension. Again you have to do a border run, but this time you want to fly somewhere, and come back. This will give you a visa exemption stamp for 30 days. If need be, you can get a 10 day extension for bt1900, but you shouldn't have to, unless you miss your flight. You will have to leave the country at least twice. There is no way around it. You can just take a bus to any border crossing the first time, then for the flight the second time, just look for where Air Asia has the cheapest flight, and go there. You won't need a tourist visa, just an excemption entry stamp for 30 days. At this point you are ready to go home.

Thanks Koolbreez. How about the return ticket that is 6 months in the future? Is it going to be a problem when I enter for the first time. Are they going to see some thing that is 3 months in the future?

I have to differ with Kool Breeze- He was focused on your situation (which is no problem) Your problem is with the ticket exceeding the visa requirements- Red tape but potentially a problem- You need to demonstrate an exit from Thailand before this current visa expires - Ie you buy a one way ticket to Cambodia - which then means the customs officer can stamp your passport with sound knowledge you will leave the kingdom- (during said visa) You can then work around the six month visa- I had a similar situation and only because I was flying to Laos was I permitted under the terms within- The capital of Laos issues two month visas for 1000 baht two day process- Koolbreeze may be correct and no attension is paid- But my clear understanding is a ticket to leave thailand must be shown to cross section the terms of visa- In your case two months- extending is no problem- Entry is another story if some arsehole decides you intend to hand around and cross borders and flaunt the system- Just buy a ticket- Play it legal and straight- otherwise you end up on some computer bank that pops up your name for the next 5 years - and life will become a bitch

You won't have any problem with being in the country for 6 months. You esentially have enough visa to cover it, and they won't even question it. If they let you on the plane, and they will, the Thai immigration at the airport is not going to be worried about your plane ticket. They aren't even going to look at it. You do not have to worry at all. You don't have to show that you are going out of the country. You will be fine. I got here on a 9 month return date on my plane ticket, and there was no concern what so ever.

... DG... a farang friend here on a diplomatic passport, and a serious guy, tells me the Thai Immigration computer system does not automatically cross-check on arrival visa violations... that Immigration still relies for the 'persona non-grata' stamp in the passport itself. ... by replacing the passport with a new one, he claims the visa violation is 'invisible' at the Immigration arrivals desk. ... Thailand being awash in 3rd world incompetence, I tend to not doubt him... (e.g. Thai traffic lights wired to an on/off toggle switch in the nearby cop-in-a-box... the typical Thai appearance before substance). ... anyone have any hard corroboration on that intel from a Thai source in, or close enough, to Thai Immigration to know first hand?

I've got a good friend that is a secretary at Thai immigration in Nong Khai, and she says the same thing your friend says Magnum. They do not care about you if you look presentable. If you are a young backpacker, or are drunk, then they take an interest in you, but other than that, they don't care. The only think the computer is in real time on is for Interpol warrants. There are still some border computers that aren't tied into the central immigration system. They are supposed to be, but they aren't. Then if something is out of the ordinary it takes someone to physically input data into the system, and most are to hurried, or lazy to do it. It is swipe the mag strip on your passport. That inputs your arrival date, and gets you into the system for this trip. That is about all it does. Then when you leave, they swipe you out, and figure if you have any overstay fines. If it is longer than so many days they black stamp you.

onera Before you decide some facts - Jingjo says quote "You not have any Problem. Butterfly your time around than when it's time to re new visa take the GF 4 the week away to wherever? " Unquote I have had two problems in 3 years- (the last 3- none prior 10) So to place my experiences in prosepective I have been back 24 times since my new passport 2008 (replaced in Bangkok) By the way it shows still as lost each and every time I pass customs there (no matter what I do) This results in an offical correcting the trip wire in computer- 5 minutes- In total I have travelled to Thailand over a decade and a half - and only problems is stolen passport- and not having a visa that stretches over the time before my flight departure date I also can assure you many officals do check that you have an exit ticket- Sure maybe just 20% of time- but if you fall into sex tourist profile dont be suprised- Twice I have had to buy one- (an exit ticket) In your case though you have a ticket - you have no visa to support the duration of connection- this might mean you need to show intent on leaving kingdom within the automatic 30 day visa Whilst the crew here might be right and you will indeed be fine- I have had the experience of having to broker an exit ticket or be refused entry- blonks right its more common in Phuket arrivals but can happen in Bangkok Whilst its true most times they dont bother- sometimes they do- Bottom line is the authorities make it clear if you intend on staying longer than the 30 days show visa- And as I said Its not so 3rd world anymore- Anyhow listern to the chorus here saying no worries but be mindful - I had real problems and advocate some caution its "up to you" I hope you waltz through- Jingjo you should tell this guy you dont really get over much anymore- So your not talking from experience - Shit does happen Let us know how it all went- ::

Bumping this thread rather than start a new topic. I'll be heading over to LOS July August this year. I'll have a return ticket (Jetstar) for roughly 55 days. My original intention was to spend 3 weeks in Thailand getting the 30 day on arrival stamp. then travel overland into Laos for a week before flying back into Thailand for another 30 day on arrival stamp. Jetstar just told me they don't have an issue carrying me as long as thailand don't have an issue accepting me. From reading this thread and others my understanding is that 9 times out of 10 Thai Imm will accept me but there is an off chance they will refuse entry. The safe course would be to get a 60 day visa prior to flying so there is no questions jetstar will carry me and thai Imm will accept me, use it up on the initial entry then get the 30 day stamp on my way back in from Laos. Does this make sense and does it sound like the safest option ?
