The cheapest way is via those vans that are offered at 150 baht. The reason why it's cheap is that they will to take you to a travel agency that will try to sell you packages. You don't have to buy anything but be prepared to stay there for about 15 minutes as they try to sell everyone something. Otherwise normal fare is somewhere around 600 baht.

... I quit going to Phuket regularly years ago... a major aggravation to me was the general unfriendliness of the place, and particularly the chronic local transportation rip-offs. ... if you plan to stay in one area, and can walk everywhere, no prob... but, if you use local ground transportation, you will have to deal with exhorbitant prices to travel even a short distance. ... recommendations: (1) rent a motorscooter... very cheap... but, only if you are an experienced rider, are comfortable exposing yourself to the Thai random rules of the road, and will not drive drunk and late at night, when most everyone else on the road is driving drunk (if you are a newbie to Thailand, do not take that last part lightly... it is a problem many happy-go-lucky 'woo-hoo, I'm on vacation!' visitors do, much to their bloodied surprise) ; or, (2) rent a car at the airport... Avis... sub-compacts are very cheap... not good for short trips, due to parking within the 'urban Patong'... same rules as above, but you've a chance to get off the island and drive a bit of the countyside.

Ignore all people until you get outside the main entrance to the airport. Take an immediate right and you will see the taxi stand. I think I paid 450B last time, but have a little extra just in case. You can take the van too, but I personally don't like having to wait until each person is dropped off at each of their hotels. I always seem to be the last one out in those situations. Have a good trip! PS - agree about the motorbike rental mentioned. It makes the trip a lot more fun as you can go around and actually see some really nice spots on the island. I avoid the tuk-tuks like the plague.

... adding to what dagul notes, that the taxi stand is to the right after departing the termimal... it is waaay right, almost concealed, so that the shysters have a better shot at snagging an exhorbitant fare (in my view, making the corrupt Thai Airports Authority complicite with the Phuket taxi mafia in the tourist scam)... the taxi mafia will all be touting 'taxi!', but the real taxi stand is well behind them.

I use same car hire place every time, cost me aprox 400-600 per day, which actually saves me money if you think how much it costs to and from airport. You can park in Patong very easy (but you need to know where.... lol).....
