I have a friend in Thailand who has applied for a tourist visa twice to visit me in the U.S. and has been told by the U.S. embassy no both times. Before she applied for the second visa I contacted my U.S. congressman to see if they could help her with the approval. No such luck. She would be paying for the airfare and I would most likely pick up the cost of our travel plans while in the U.S.. She applied with a letter from her employer stating she is a good employee, she had bank records with account values, and a contract for a condo she is purchasing in Bangkok. Still she was denied the Visa. Now to my question. Is it easier gain entry into Canada? I'm thinking we could meet in Vancouver and take a 7 day cruise of Alaska. Anyone know the process for a Canadian tourist visa and whether this is easier to obtain than a U.S.A. tourist visa? It really bothers me that I can show up in Bangkok tomorrow as an American citizen with no prior arrangements and gain entry with no problem while she jumps through hoops to visit me and still gets a NO. Thanks for any help in advance. She would like to visit July 3-July 13.

Can your congressman find out why she is being turned down? On the face of it seems like she would meet the requirments. Good luck!! 9 days till I show up in Bangkok. Not trying to be a smart ass but one of the advantages of being the world's #1 superpower is being able to show up without a visa. Just ask Saddam about all the American tourist that showed up last month. Good luck.

Hi BigD When I contacted my congressman I was directed to someone on his staff who deals with Imigration/INS issues. I was told they could not put any "undue pressure" on the embassy to help in the visa process but would inquire on her behalf. I work for a large media company with a presence in Thailand (Bangkok) and was told by a friend who is stationed in Thailand that the U.S. govt has a hard time "believing" that anyone would want to visit the U.S. and actually return to Thailand". He said it is common policy to turn down any single female requesting a tourist visa to the U.S.. My friend actually said the consular told her "no" because she was a single female travelling solo to the U.S. aaaaargh. LastSurvivor

I hate to say it, but you are better off buying a lottery ticket and hoping for the BIG ONE. I am not trying to be funny either. I am a Canadian and tried getting a visa for a TG.

Same generally goes for OZ. Unfortunately many western Immigration Staff are advised to treat all single asian females (SAF)as suspected ................. and so reject their tourist applications - Straight from the mouth of someone who works in this capacity. His quote: "Its not as though they are going to be big tourist money spenders in our country". Also immmigration departments, now have stricter criteria for assessment of most asian tourists, which virtually allows them to deny anyboby entry(particulary single females) on the basis they no longer meet "All the criteria requirements". Its a safe "legally out" that you can't get arround. Even with a fiancee attachment or Ýa marriage certificate the visa approval is not guarranteed and the approval process much longer than a tourist visa. They generally view all the SAF as flight risks who will not return to their countries and outstay their visa. SORRY BUT YOUR CHANCES ARE VERY SLIM.

Craigoz is right LastSurvivor. ÝSAFs (Thai, Philipino, Indonesians) are regarded as flight risks by most of the developed countries. To answer your questions: If she has a sizeable income (say 25000-35000 Baht a month), A good Bank record (say US$ 10000-15000) is normally ok. Most of my female Thai friends (single) were granted a 5 years visa. Three even hold a lifetime one. But since your friend was already turned down twice (she have 2 black stamps in her passport now) the best bet for you now is a Canadian Tourist visa. But tell her to arrange this Canadian Visa by some reputable tour agency. The agencies act as guarantor. If your friend defaults on her visa then the travel agency is in trouble and may lose their license. But in 85% cases the visas were issued. Tell your friend not to mention about meeting you in Vancouver in her visa interview. Best Luck

Boheme, Correct and once they are rejected several time, the Immigration Department can also identify/note them as an even "higher risk" again. After several rejections their becomes a tendency by the next official to just reject their application without any fassessment Ýof it- A "Follow the leader or predecessor mentality". Certainly the OZ Immig Department gives no creedance to the guarrantee of any travel or immigration agent. The applications are treated as "Stand alone" based on the merits of the applicant only. Even a Husband carries little weight with them. She also has to have a very sound reason for the visit visa (visiting family is the best) and normally a well travelled passport. New passports are a no-no. Visa Immigration Rules have changed thesedays, in many places, in light of recent events and the new rules are not openly disclosed.

I received a letter from my congressman today stating that they had contacted the embassy on her behalf. This was basically to let them know that a constituent had contacted their office on her behalf and to let the embassy know she would be applying again on May 9th. Attached to the letter from my congressman was the reply from the Vice Consular saying that she had indeed applied again and was unable to exhibit strong ties to her home country of thailand. I'm not sure what she could do different. She owns a home in N. Thailand, earns 20k baht per month, had a letter from her employer detailing her excellent work history, the equivalent of 6k U.S. dollars in a bank account, and a contract on a Condo to be built in October in Bangkok. Unbelievable. This just bothers me for some reason. Seems unfair that I can just show up at the airport and I'm admitted with few if any questions. She wants to apply again and I've advised that this might not be a wise thing to do. I appreciate all the feedback and I'll be back in LOS for three weeks in October. Can't wait! Last Survivor

LS, Its the Bureaucratic wall of silence that most if not all government departments hide behind and very difficult to break through. That was in effect Ýpolite "No" dont bother us anymore. And yes its total bullshit, but then again all those who run our governments and work in the public service areas (particularly consular & immigration)are made from the same shit - Non-achievers of the world, who are a parasite on society and a waste of space on this planet. Basically people who could not survive in the professional private work environment, so they hide. They are the epitome of bullshit. Now, if she had happened to sleep with one or if she was his/her girlfiend then they would give her a visa. Personal knowledge of OZ corrupt parasites who issued visas to his/her bed partner and her girlfriends. P4P My sympathies to your dilemma.
