Gents: If you had a choice between flying CP or EVA to BKK (assuming all else was the same - - price, class, etc.), which would you choose?

I haven't flown these two airlines but I've flown UAL, SAS, BA, Quantas, Singapore, Thai, Finnair and Lufthansa. Back in the cheap seats, they are all the same except UAL they have economy plus which gives you 5 extra inches of legroom. Food, drink and service are equal. SQ and Thai have the prettest flight attendence.

I usually fly Eva. However I have several friends who are senior Cathay Pacific pilots and based on their frank remarks to me over drinks at my house, I would have to say that Cathay Pacific is by far the better maintained fleet of aircraft and overall much safer than ANY of the Asian airlines and that includes Thai, Singapore, etc. JAL maybe the only exception.

If I could afford CP I could tell you. EVA is much cheaper (from the UK anyway) often able to get business for about £700 which is not far off economy on CP (I believe)

If you're travelling Economy, in my view CX is the preferred one because more of its planes have individual video screens in the economy section. ŬThe EVA Economy section is very much plain vanilla (although seat pitch is 34" as opposed to CX's 32" - a noticeable difference). However, EVA has four classes instead of three, with Evergreen Deluxe squeezing in between Economy and Business Class of most airlines. ŬThis class has Economy service but Business Class seating. ŬIf you can get this class at a reasonable rate, it's a no-brainer - Evergreen Deluxe beats CX Economy every time. Both fleets are pretty well maintained. ŬEVA, admittedly a new airline, have yet to suffer a hull-loss.

I've never flown Cathay. But many times on EVA. Had my all time worst flight on EVA too. Bkk to LA via Taipei. Well, Taipei was in midst of a major storm and after 2 hrs stackup we diverted to Hkaoshiung for landing and refueling. Then back to Taipei. This time conditions had "improved" so we could TRY to land, but every time we hit 12,000 ft we plummetted like a stone to 5000 -- wind sheer -- and went into a power climb. It took 15 tries like this before we landed. Imminent fear of certain death. And a widebelly full of screaming Chinese trying to chase the devils away. All right, we're on the tarmac at CKS. Off to the transit lounge to spend 2 hrs working up the courage to get back on the plane. We do so, and 2 hrs out the Captain informs us that we are diverting to Sapporo, Japan for a medical emergency, there's a woman on board with acute appendicitis. Well, Sapporo has a curfew and although they couldn't stop us from landing, they bloody well could stop us from taking off again till 0930 and it was presently about midnight. No transit lounge, had to stay on the aircraft and no liquor service while on the ground. The widebody full of Chinese (and me) was now screaming BLOODY JAPS! I did have a long talk with a cute stew but alas, a blowjob was out of the question. Eventually got into LAX where I should have had a 12 hr layover, and had to run to make my TWA connection to St Louis. My baggage didn't make it. My advice is, don't fly through Taipei when the weather is bad. On EVA or any other carrier.

It was April 2000 and I was flying home to attend a party for my parents' Golden Anniversary (married 50 years). I probably will fly Eva again, they aren't a bad airline, but I probably WILL inquire about weather conditions in Taipei. Incidentally on the return leg of the trip, again at LAX departing for Bkk via Taipei, the JAL counter (which was taking care of Eva checkin) informed me that they wouldn't seat me because I had no visa to enter Thailand. US citizens need no visa to enter Thailand, we get an arrival visa. Anyway, as I pointed out to this young berk, I DID have a valid Re-Entry Permit for Thailand, which is used instead of visa as I am on a long stay visa issued in 1990 and still continuously extended, annually. I did get seated, but was unimpressed with the colossal ignorance of the JAL counter staff at LAX. Officious idiots!!
