FYI,
i know that this topic is kind of non-related but i have to just bring it out in the open. so all can think about it.
today a friend of mine was to be in China having her holiday but what happened was that the flight got delayed for almost 3 hours due to snow in Beijing so that was fine.
the flight was to be scheduled to leave at 3am in the morning but the pilot missed his called and only came at 3am, how would the passengers feel having a feeling their captian has over slept or what was the reason of him being late? thus delaying further more. then there were fueling issues as the airline claimed that ground technicians could not open the fuel hatch. they got it open finally and captain announced that they will be on their way in 30 minutes once the fueling is done but guess what they claimed that the fuel hatch could not close and this was already 5am!
the passengers got really worried and starts to lose confidence in the flight and some got frustrated. up to this point the airline was not honest and the captain did not address the matter to the passengers and just locked himself in the cockpit.
the passengers alighted the plane and due to all confusion they were left stranded at the airport when the plane flew off without them. the funny thing was how come the plane could leave when the passengers have already checked in? i guess as much as the tour organisers are to share the blame for this mishaps as well.
it was just a total mess. so in other words, try to avoid China Southern Airlines. This is not the first time it has happened but the first time to someone close to me. I think they suck!

I just got back from China. ÝDuring my stay I flew China Southern Airlines and found the Airline to be run as effeciently as any airline in the West. Ý They were flying new Airbuses. Ý
You also have to remember (culuturally) the concept of face not wanting to offend. ÝSo the chinese have an tendency to tell people what they think the person wants to hear, in order to avoid a confrontation. ÝI don't think it was ment as a lie. ÝWe in the West intterpret it as a lie although.

it would be best if the representitive of the airline to come forward and to explain what is happening. as what is see it is like they (airlines) think that is what the passengers wanted to hear and did nothing about it.
to me no one...(both airline and tour agent) did nothing to calm the situation and build the confidence of the passengers.
and one more thing.....i am not from the West but from the East. surprise surprise!

12 years in the avaition industry and this is the worst case i'll heard of!!! with a attitude and management like that, i'm wont be surprised if China Airlines go bust!!!

Chrisboy,
Unfortunately, it's not China Airlines from Taiwan, which has a poor safety record, but China Southern Airlines from mainland China, which has so far a very good reputation.

Yep, as you say China Airlines from Taiwan has a poor safety record. Their flights are cheap and I guess this is how they attract people...

wouldn't it be scary that an airline is giving you cheaper prices just because they do not have a good track record?
how about the destination in which only has that airline flying there? and does not have a good track record?
bummer...i got SQ to go with...cheaper than the others...but i would say it is due to the transiting in Singapore first...rather than their incident of SQ6.
