How much is a fair price to hire a car and driver per day. Does anyone know where is a good agency to book the driver and the car. ( I used to go through the hotel, but I think that is more pricy than going through a private agency)

Juniper, I should have answered on the other thread when you asked before; but I have only out of date info and the way I did it was through connections that would not be available to you (not as impressive as it sounds).

blade, hell no! i only used highway car rent once and never again! first they apply stupid surcharges for farang, second their prices are not cheap, third the haggle about some old scratches as soon as you return the car and fourth their cars are not very new and technically in a questionable condition. why not just use the international brand names like hertz, budget or avis. first of all their is only one price for the car so no farang surcharge. they do have cheaper rates as highway (compareable to the link you posted), new or newer cars, no hassle about damages and you can drop the car anywhere you like within thailand as they do have an extensive branch network! why bother with any private thai car renting company when you can get the international standards for less money with better service!

griffin, thanks for the info - it appears that you and I have different experience with highway. so far i have been using highway for the past 8 years and didn't encounter a single problem and that is why i have recommended them. actually, there is a surcharge of Baht 2,000 (it used to be Baht 1,000) refundable upon return of the car. they will check the car thoroughly before handing down the refund, but i don't know their policy if the car has a scratch - so far i haven't return a car with a scratch though (the customer and representative will jointly check the car before handing it over) . one good thing is that if i happen to rent the car for 2 days and went upcountry, change the length of rent into 5 days there will be no need for me to come to bangkok and sign a contract again...just call them about the extension and pay the balance when i return the car. the cheapest they have are manual toyota corollas valued at Baht 800 per day and again i didn't encounter any engine failure even for long trips so the entire package is acceptable to my requirements. there are many different brands parked in front of their office and anyone can choose and compare the price with other car rent company. bigin, most rental car companies have an option w/ or w/o the driver and this is why i asked juniper to contact them directly and inquire

blade just for reference are you farang or ethnic asian? i think there might be the difference in treatment. i never made as sratch in any of their cars it was just their way of trying to squeeze more money out of the 'farang'. Also the cheapest i was quoted for that corolla was thb 1,500 a day and that after 30 minutes discussions. in addition they really do not like to serve farangs as i usually had to hazzle the staff to even servicing me as they were so busy chatting drinking coffee and doing other more important things than servicing a farang. once again for that price you can easily also go to the big international ones like avis, hertz, budget. there as well if you do not hand back the car in time just call and you pay some extra days later. all these international car companies do have a drivers option but i never checked the prices on them. another alternative might be to rent a taxi for the day on a fixed price. might be cheaper and more conveniant than enting a car!

regret to hear your experience griffin...im asian and can speak thai upto some degree - maybe this is the main issue re our opposite situation. yeah, renting a taxi could be better minus the paperwork, wasted time, extreme care and probably hassles when renting a car.

you can get vans with drivers for around 1500 baht per day...ask around where the van taxis are parked and waiting for passengers...

I have also used the vans and drivers for days at a time. But always had some Thai associate lay this on, and it always worked out fine. However I agree with griffin that a farang walkin would get a different and less positive experience. 1500 baht a day is what we always paid, plus fuel, plus a tip for the driver usually 500-1000 baht. I used this sort of service most recently for a trip Bangkok-Poipet-Bangkok. Previously, about 8 years ago, we had occasion to travel from Bangkok to five Army bases with a team of Border Patrol snipers and a load of machine guns and ammunition...Nakorn Sawan, Khorat, Pranburi/Hua Hin. Ta Phraya/Nakorn Si Thammarat, and Kanchanaburi. Anyone who thinks the drivers didn't warn their tips doesn't know Thai highwats very well.
