Met a fellow traveler who is from Malaysia, and have been emailing back and forth. I saw somewhere (maybe even another forum) where someone wanted info about train travel from Malaysia to BKK. I thought it would be nice to go to Malaysia for a bit, and then up to BKK myself. Anyway, it can be done. Here is my malaysian friends info: In regards to your enquiry about the train from Johor Bahru to Bangkok, there is definitely such services available via the KTM (Keratapi Tanah Melayu!). However, it is definitely not a direct trai. From Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur, one will have to travel approximately 6 hours to reach Kuala Lumpur for a brief stop. From Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, the journey will take another 24 hours with a short stop at the Butterworth train station in Penang, most probably for a couple of hours. It is going to be a long long trip even though it is pretty cheap.

Better to try the bus. From my experience will take 24 about 24 hrs. Take a bus from the southern Terminal (sai Tai)to Hat Yai, then take a connecting bus to Kuala Lumpur. In my opinion you will save at least 12 hours of travelling time plus a little cheaper too.

Dann: I have taken the BKK/Butterworth train a couple of times on visa runs. It isn't a bad trip but is rather long. You need to get the first class sleeper and you will bed down for about half the trip. I always thought it might be nice to take a TG with me but never did. It is something you might want to do once.

I didn't think 1st class is available on the train down to Butterworth? It is only as far as Hat Yai, then the train divides.
