I well-educated Thai freind of mine said that the Taksin goverment has just started issueing national health-care ID cards to all Thai citzens. You pay 30baht a month for any care at a govt hospitla dn 130baht for private. You half to apply to your city hall based on your ID card's address and the money is drawn from your bank account. I have not yet confirmed this but my LTGF is going to check it out. Has anyone heard of this?

As of May 2003, 45.6 million Thais had registered at 1,000 hospitals for the 30B health scheme. I'm sure the figure is higher now. It was one of the schemes that got Thaksin elected. It's also responsible for the Thai hospital system getting deeper and deeper into the red.
Is that the scheme you're talking about?

Yup, but I am interested for the sake of my LTGF. Is it actually operational? It is much better than paying 2000b everytime she goes to the doctor.

Oh, I don't know. Ask one of the 45.6 million Thais already using the service for the last few years, or one of the hospitals going bust because of it...
D'oh!
PS If she/you can afford it, keep going to the doctor. Public hospitals are not the sort of places you'd want to visit. Last but one time I was in one I saw three people die in as many hours. No soap. No cleaners. No tissues for consumptives. Cats and dogs in the corridors. Not pleasant. And I don't know where you get 2,000B from -- last time I went to a soi doctor it cost me 650B, including medication.
PPS A quick search for '30 baht health scheme' using Google produces 16,800 hits, 878 of which are Thai sites in English. Just an idea.

A quick talk to any smart person in Thailand will tell you that the 30 THB thing is the way for Mr Sattelite to make the hospitals go on there knees. If you read the peppers the same guy is Buying all the private hospitals. Smart guy

I am only going by word of mouth from a trusted Thai friend, but she has the plan where 130b is taken from her account and she can use private hospitals.
This does sounds rinky-dinky and alot like forced-socialism to me. Ii may be legit for now, but it will bankrupt their system.
Everyone likes to say how evil the US health care system is because it is not free. Well, there is a reason everyone comes here for it, even the illegal aliens.
The fact is that no one gets turned down and taxpayers have to pay for it so, in essence, American healthcare is free for those that can not afford it.
