Does anyone know where I can get laser surgery for vision correction in Thailand?  If so, how much does it cost to get it done?

I had Lasik surgery at Bumrungrad Hospital about 4 years ago.  I was very impressed with the service from start to finish. I paid Baht 26K per eye but I would imagine the price has come down since then.

Kenny,
I just had this done a few months back and did ALOT of looking around first!  There is a place on Rama 4 (HSBC building near Silom) that stands above the rest in Bangkok, address below.

expect to pay about 30,000 per eye.  Bumrungrad is cheaper but is sort of set up like a factory and they don't really go through all the possible ups and downs.  It is just another service they offer at the hospital.

This is not something you look for a deal on.  Go with the best doctors and best service.  You will need at least 2 weeks in Bangkok to get it done and you should have a follow up visit after 1-2 months, and again at 6 months, 1 year (all included in price)

The whole cut and laser takes about 20 minutes and you go home and sleep after...

Is the technic itself safe ?
Last time I have checked success rate was high but not 100% and with chances your view will be not as good as what you can have with glasses/contacts.
Also afterwards you are supposed to become very sensitive to bright lights at nightime.

Anyone has comments on this ?

Marco,

The chance of success depends upon your age, the correction required and a host of other pre-tests that you have to go through prior to the actual procedure.

As I had previously worn extended wear contact lenses for a long time, I was required to remove my contacts and use glasses for 2 weeks prior to the procedure. Other than that one requirement, I fell in the 'preferred candidate' category. I had no side effects at all and no problems with bright lights afterwards.

I agree with TaoHuaNgu about not looking for a deal on this type of thing - you should check around to find the physician and a venue that you are comfortable with. In my experience the facilities at Bumrungrad and my chosen physician were very professional.  I had 3 consultations prior to surgery, a pre-op briefing and follow up check-ups afterwards.

As far as I am concerned it is one of the best decisions I've ever made - I will never forget that first morning being able to see clearly without contacts lenses.

My golf game improved as well...although I still find myself waking up with a rough one from time to time.

Thanks for the answer. Risking your eyes to save a couple of bahts is indeed not something to do.

The choice of having the surgery done in Thailand nonetheless makes sense since hostpitals like Bumrungrad are up to international standards.

To further the recommendation of TaoHuaNgu, I recently underwent Lasik at TRSC.   Cost was 71,000 baht for both eyes.   Great environment.  Very professional.    I wore glasses/contacts for over 30 years.    A day after the surgery, my sight was already 20/12.5 which was better than I ever got with glasses or contacts.

I am reading this out of sheer curiosity as I do not need to get this done, but given that I am already curious, would anyone be kind enought to tell me what are the costs you could expect back in the west? Say the USA?

I just want to get an idea of what the savings are in % terms.

Costs are basically the same in the states.   No savings here.

Like a few said, taking risks with your eyes is not something to bargin price with. I know of a guy in the USA who went to one of those bargin places in the mall and after 6 Lasik operations he loss sight in one eye and needs glasses for the other. Of course he is sueing and the place is out of operation now, but who cares.

I used the guy who actually wrote the book on the procedure and is in LA who does most of the movie stars and LA Laker players. The price was $4500.00 for both eyes and all follow-up visits. A little on the high side, but see para. 1 above.

As you age you still require reading glasses, just like you would require bi-focals with glasses.

In regards to the halos and stars at night, my doctor said this was caused by less expensive equipment that treated a smaller diameter of the cornea, the procedures done with better equipment will not have this side effect.
