Gus
I went to LOS in November and finished up going to Bangkok/Pattaya hospital for some anti-biotics to clear up a severe sore throat.
On my recent 4 week trip, again have had two really bad sore throats.
OK, I DATY, DFK, use the Air Con a lot and go into the sea most days.
Most TGs are very clean down below, but I expect the DATY is number 1 suspect, although the others cannot be ruled out.
I use Listerine, Strepsils etc but I am not having much luck.
FWIW I still have my Tonsils, any tips most welcome? Fire Away

I would suspect bateria in air con units over DATY. Maintenance on air cons at many places is non-existance with some filters never being changed since they were installed. Were you staying in better hotels or older cheaper ones?

Gus,
Take or leave this advice, up to you.
Do not self prescribe what could be wrong with you and just take any sort of medicine. Listerine and strepsils are only good for giving your mouth a fresh feeling and maybe clear a little bacteria away.

Last year I had a couple of throat infections and ended up at the hospital. Dr prescribed Amoxicyllin 500mg, so I took them and the infections went. However another came up and I just got more Amox and thought this would do the trick. Completely wrong, ended up in the hospital receiving large and I mean large penicyllin (?) needles in the arse for 3 days. I had infected tonsils. They insisted and really put the pressure on for me to stay in hospital on a drip. Apart from making a lot of money out of me if I agreed, I decided on the needles and they hurt more than the infection, not joking there.

Another BTF was with me and the only reason they decided to let me go and come back as an outpatient, was that I told them my mate was going to stay with me all the time (bullshit of course and I wised him up in case they asked him). But my mate kept ringing me to check on my welfare, so with the hospital just around the corner and my mates phone calls, I was safe.

At first I thought I had just another sore throat. The Drs explained to me, that there are many different sort of bugs out there, especially if you 69 the girls and rim them. The Drs do not know all of the bugs, but it could be from Air-con, who knows. Sorry to go on a bit about this but, be cautious, do not think it could be just another sore throat. I learned the hard way and cost quite a few thousand Baht. Go to a Dr and get it checked properly, but like I said..up to you. And remember, your throat is attached to your dick and if your dick was a little bit sore, you would panic, right..then off to the Drs. BTW, what is DATY & DFK?

I got sick as hell on my last trip out. I was too lazy to adjust the aircon in the hotel room, which was on full blast all night. The day after the next I had a terrible sore throat and a nasty cough. I was sick for a month with it. I went to a pharmacy and had a my LT explain my symptoms. They gave me 3 to 4 different sets of pills. Wonder what was wrong with me. I never kept up with the pills. First time I visited a pharmacy connected to a massage parlor.

Yes, the first 4 days I stayed at the Landmark, the rest of the trip Bungalows, although 1 never had A/C.

DATY is known as Dining at the Y
DFK is Deep French Kissing
These abbreviations are from World sex Guide.

I'll see how I get on the next few days, if no improvement I will visit the Docs, at least it only costs the prescription fee.
Thanks for the info guys, by the way on Koh Samui the sea water doesn't look too clean and you can't keep your mouth water-tight all the time.

I have had a sore throat in Bangkok several times the worst was after I had a trip in a Tuk Tuk and I was told it was the air that caused it. The smog in Bangkok is terrible at times.

Another option for you and Sukhumvit outside Landmark is maybe just about one of the worst places IMHO

Everyone gets sick when they visit BKK. Pollution, Pigs in the blanket, climate change, sick air conditioning, sick buuildings, etc. It's part of the experience. It takes awhile to build up your immune sys to the atmosphere. Most peeps get sick from the flight from Farlong Land because of the shit on the plane. People breathing and coughing all over you...Bottom Line...Pussy never kills ya.

Good idea to also keep a mouthwash containong Chlorhexidine, Mybacin makes one which is available in thai pharmacies. its broader spectrum than Listerine, a true anti bacterial. get the TG to slosh some around before she goes down on you.

Some good tips here guys.
The thing is if we know we will be sick, what can we do to prevent sore throts etc.
The better than Listerine mouthwash seems a good idea.
With the A/C I don't fancy f***ing about with filters, not sure if you can have a bowl of water or something in the room to help with the moisture.
Same, Same with those flights, we are all stuckon one for a minimum 10 hours and USA a lot more breathing in all that shit.
Was it Michael jackson a few years ago had his own oxygen system?

I had repetitive sore throats last year, every 2-3 weeks - really began to get me down. Some of it was due to chronic tonsillitis flaring up, trouble is by the time I got to see the quack it 'flared down again'. Eventually I manged to coordinate a visit with a major flare up and got the diagnosis I needed. Take a torch and something flat to depress your tongue and take a look in the mirror to see if there are any white spots on the tissues either side of the way-back of the throat.

That did not account entirely for the strep-throat symptoms, though may have acted as a reservoir of bugs that could take advantage of damage to the mucosa of the throat which usually protect it from infection. The underlying reason may have been chronic reflux. Everybody gets some occasions when stomach acid returns up the gullet but not frequently enough for it to do significant damage or for it not to heal between bouts. I was getting it every night, while asleep and eventually it erodes the mucosa and allows infection to establish itself. See your quack if you get frequent bouts of acid reflux, burning sensations in your chest etc.

Finally I have also engaged on an anti-cold/flu that includes: avoiding crowds (not travelling on the tube in rush-hour), washing hands and using hand cleanser (alcohol gel from work at hospital) even outside work, taking echinacea and other vitamin supplements and, whenever someone with symptoms comes within striking distance or when I have to be on a train carriage which is more than 50% full or before a flight, using that new anti-viral nasal spray called Fist Defence. This latter supposedly coats the vulnerable mucosa of the nose and throat with a suspension of particles that bind to virii before they can penetrate and enter your system.

So far this flu season I've only had one very mild chest cough which never seemed to really take hold. No sore throats since my Xmas tour, after which I started the above.

This might seem extreme, even hypochondriacal, but over one year of almost constant cold and flu symptoms really got me down, especially when I was coming down with something every LOS tour too. Last tour was pretty much okay though 8^)

There is another consideration as someone who works in hospital environments and is aware of how bugs move around - IF the bird flu does mutate into a human-human contagious form it will be the people who wash their hands frequently, avoid crowds and unnecessary physical contact with strangers and are aware of hand to face/nose/mouth operations who will fare better, with or without vaccines. If you can get through a UK flu season without a sniffle, then you'll have upped your chances IF the big one strikes.

Just some thoughts and experiences,
