It's a nightmare this problem. I had something similar about 7 years ago all tests negative just constant pain, went on for 6 months and like you I was at my wits end. These low grade infection are notoriosly hard to treat (if thats what it is), it seems the docs don't really know when it comes to these problems, and of course i'd only be guessing what it might be, did the doc mention prostatitis? probably not what you want to hear but there is a lot of info on the web as it's not uncommon, maybe check some forums out you might be able to find some better advice.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome is the most common but least understood form of prostatitis. It is found in men of any age, its symptoms go away and then return without warning, and it may be inflammatory or noninflammatory. In the inflammatory form, urine, semen, and other fluids from the prostate show no evidence of a known infecting organism but do contain the kinds of cells the body usually produces to fight infection. In the noninflammatory form, no evidence of inflammation, including infection-fighting cells, is present. Antibiotics will not help nonbacterial prostatitis. You may have to work with your doctor to find a treatment that's good for you. Changing your diet or taking warm baths may help. Your doctor may give you a medicine called an alpha blocker to relax the muscle tissue in the prostate. No single solution works for everyone with this condition.

Thanks, guys. Prostatitis?? I've researched this before and thought I might have it; I don't recall the urologist mentioning anything of that sort. Prostatitis.org says that "On the scientific level, the causes of prostatitis are not completely understood. There is controversy among the most highly regarded experts." That's lovely. My biggest concern is whether it can lead to complications (e.g. infertility) or whether I can potentially infect someone, etc. Finally, did I get it from someone?? Crazy.

Golden Star, Get a second opinion from a second urologist, and a third opinion from another, if need be. Could be prostatitis (or worse) or could be a low grade infection. Did they do a culture to try to isolate a bacterial pathogen? There are tests that can be run to determine this sort of stuff, requiring them to insert a sampling device in the urethra to collect possible infectious agents. Then they will culture it to see if anything grows. If it is a chronic low-grade infection, it can be very hard to treat, as many of these are becoming highly resistant to the usual spectrum of drugs. But if you are being treated for a non-infection, then you're on the wrong course. I would dig deeper with your doctor, and get another urologist to chime in. - Balls

Balls, They just did the standard test - collected my urine and send it off the lab. Nothing elaborate. I'll get a second opinion as well. Thanks for your input, fellas. GS

Sounds like frustrated prostate syndrome to me,,, only truly effective answer is at least 6 vists per year to LOS ( or similiar). Regular vists are essential or you get under / over use syndrome,, going from zero to 1,000km per hour.

Possibly you may have what many of red blooded males get when they are away from Thai P4Ps. Symptoms: DSBS. The only cure is to book another trip and put it to work, ASAP.

The prostate is extremely sensitive to alcohol, coffee/tea (caffeine), spices and any kind of decongestant which contains antihistamines, like Benadryl. Alcohol is probably the biggest irritant of all. Moreover, drinking will negate any positive effect of antibiotics. Of all antibiotics only two are really effective at permeating the extremely resilient lining of the prostate....drugs of the quinolone family (Ofloxacin etc) and Bactrim. Chronic prostatitis has been known to linger and drive men to despair because it can cause impotence and interfere with a satisfactory ejaculation, extremely important to the enjoyment of any trip to the east. Some liken it to a fire that can still smoulder under a haystack and resurface just when you think you've licked it. Only way to tackle it is through sustained tereatment. 2 weeks of Ofloxacin 200 mg (1 morning/1 nite) followed by 2 weeks of Bactrim (1 morning/1nite). Repeat this cycle THREE times. And forget about alcohol for those 4 months or so. Sounds excessive but I got this from a book called Private Parts written by an american urologist, Yosh Taguchi. Read it, its got a lot of stuff you should know. If taking a prolonged course of antibiotics, be sure to accompany it with a course of probiotics (acidophilus, multidophilus etc) so you aren't left susceptible to a candida attack brought on by depletion of good bacteria in your gut.
