Can alcohol cause epilepsy? http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/alcohol.html A 'binge' on alcohol can cause a seizure, even in people who do not have epilepsy. Such seizures can be due to alcohol withdrawal, toxic effects of alcohol, too much fluid, metabolic changes in the body and vitamin or nutritional deficiencies. Studies suggest that alcohol withdrawal seizures usually happen 7-48 hours after reducing or stopping excessive or prolonged alcohol intake. Some people who continue to drink large quantities of alcohol and who experience further seizures are quite likely to develop epilepsy as a result of this. Even if alcohol consumption is stopped altogether, the seizures may continue to happen unless anti-epileptic medication is introduced and seizure control gained. --- Seen these symptoms & conditions in quite a few people in BKK.

Quote: from quack quack on 10:32 pm on Feb. 14, 2010 Personally believe that alcohol, in moderation does little harm & is one of the pleasures available in life.
You *do* know what the word 'toxin' means, right? Alcohol's a toxin. I can get the same pleasurable effects via non-toxic means, and watching drunks make fools of themselves is more fun as an observer - just go to any BTF meet up, for that.

Alcohol is no different to other drugs. The odd drink, toke or sniff are fine. But do it daily, in large quantities and its all down hill. The time span this happens depends on the drug, but alcohol is pretty addictive and available everywhere so do the math. There is a misconception because alcohol and cigarettes are legal they are fine and illegal drugs not. This may be the propaganda thats churned out but its about as true as global warming. Its all same same the only difference is we know the dosage of the drug and the content. Also the effect is fairly predictable, but boring to be around for a tee totaler for any length of time.

Whether or not alcohol is harmful,or without any benefit, depends a lot on how it is consumed. Studies have established that the consumption of red wine,in moderation, and on a daily basis, gives positive heart benefits. Moderate social alcohol drinkers statistically live longer than teetotallers. However, whether this statistical result is due to alcohol consumption,as opposed to other lifestyle factors enjoyed by social drinkers but not by teetotallers,is not clear. Alcohol has been widely consumed by human beings for thousands of years, and has become entrenched in human culture in many aspects socially and even religiously, for example the partaking of wine in the sacrament of the Eucharist. Thus despite its undoubted ill effects if consumed excessively, alcohol seems to occupy an important role in our culture, and I do not see it disappearing any time soon.

Good points, CheapCharlie - particularly the misconception by addicts that because alcohol and cigarettes are legal, they must not be harmful (which I always find laughable). There are a great many behaviors, drugs, and products that have been widely done by human beings for thousands of years, and it is true that, to people on auto-pilot, these will continue to be used. Doesn't mean thinking people should fall prey to the same auto-pilot thinking.
