Because of Thailand Food & Drug regulations, I can only bring a 30 day supply of my pain medication with me this trip, and I have to register to bring it with me, but I'm staying for 60 days, and I just found out my pain medication is not available in Thailand. I take Oxycodone, and am alergic to most other pain meds. Because of these regulations my doctor won't prescribe me more than a 30 day supply, so this is going to end up being a very painful bummer of a vacation, plus going through narcotic withdrawals, Woohoo. I knew something was going to ruin my vacation.......everything was going to smoothly.

... while Thai medicine is not up to speed with Western standards, some very good Western medicine is practiced in some hospitals here. ... two are Bumrungrad Hospital (http://www.bumrungrad.com), and Samitivej Hospital (http://www.samitivejhospitals.com/)... check if either have pain management specialists on staff with Western credentials... there might be other hospitals who might work with you on this. ... consider having your physician work with a local physician to get you local meds beyond your 30-day supply... if they do not have your preferred med in Thailand already, with some advanced planning, I would be surprised if they are unable to get your preferred med brought in. ... if you are reliant upon insurance to cover this, the paperwork will likely be way too much with which to deal... just pay it out of pocket and consider it part of the cost of a very generous 60-day holiday.

Thanks for the suggestions, but any medications that have to be brought in have to go through the Thai FDA's narcotics supply subdivision. I have emailed them to find out how to do this, and typical of gov't haven't received a reply. I have to send all the paperwork to the Thai FDA next week, so it reaches them in the required 2 weeks before my arrival, so I can get my permit to even have my medication in Thailand. Many of the regulations about what medicines you can bring, how much, and the registration process just went into effect in September of 09. With the new regulations my old medication would have landed me in jail just for bringing it into the country....lol. I have been working with pain management specialists for 2 years, I don't need a rediagnosis. I just need strong pain meds that I'm not allergic to. This includes Vicodin, methadone, cortizone, steroids, and a few others, so opiates are about all I can take, and I take allot of them. My doctor is through the Veterans medical administration so any cordination with a Thai doctor, and my doctor is impossable with the short time frame I have before I leave. My medical records do travel with me though. My good friend is a pharmacist in Thailand, so we will figure something out. At the very extreme, and last alternative, I might have to be a heavy alcoholic for my last 3 weeks....lol.

... I would bag trying to deal directly with the Thai FDA... use a local physician, perhaps your pharmacist friend, to deal with it locally... I do not suggest a local pain management specialist to diagnose you again... he will have the special skills and resources to procure the powerful meds you need. ... you might move more quickly than you think by calling one of the big hospitals and hooking your physician up with a local doctor to figure this out. ... as QuackQuack suggests above, you might also consider a trip to Singapore, if getting the pain medication you need is any easier there... a r/t economy fare ticket from BKK or Phuket would be maybe US$ 200-250... a 2-1/2 hour flight, you could do it in a day. ... good luck. (alternatively, consider doing a run to a lower medical technology country, and make the trip northward to Laos... my guess is that pharmaceutical opiates might be more common and easily accessible there)
