"iPod-Sized HIV Detector to Bring Affordable Testing to Rural Communities

Right now it's difficult, if not impossible, to quickly detect HIV in patients living in impoverished countries. That may all change soon, though — researchers at a California outfit called the Palo Alto Research Center have built an iPod-sized handheld device that can offer up an immune check-up in under 10 minutes — all with a prick of the finger.

The $250 prototype device analyzes blood taken from a finger prick by sending blood cells through a laser beam-illuminated channel, where a detector checks out light patterns to count CD4+ T cells — immune system cells killed by HIV. When the T cell count drops under 250, antiretroviral treatment is recommended.

The research center's device could be invaluable to third world health workers who may not have access to labs. They can simply stick the analyzer in their backpacks and whip it out for on-the-spot testing. With millions of people around the world without access to a full-size laboratory, PARC's device could revolutionize the detection and treatment of HIV."

If it counts cells, it does not detect presence of HIV. HIV is presumed present by the detection of antibodies -that is how current test go.

Counting of T cells helps, TOGETHER with presence of HIV antibodies helps diagnose AIDS.

You could have a low count of T cell, without presence of HIV antibodies. You would still be sick, but that would not be called AIDS; I do not remember now the name of that condition.

It's ICL (Idiopathic CD4+Lympho-cytopenia), but remember people with low t cell counts are not necessarily sick, with or without a positve HIV test.

In any case, you can have PLENTY of HIV (the virus), before you become sero-positive, and still be able to infect others. A device like this is ripe for misuse by people ignorant of the 90-180 day window before you have detectable antibodies, OR low t-cell counts.

This device COULD be used responsibly, to detect previously undiagnosed cases in rural communities, but like the test kits that used buccal swabs, will be subverted by punters trying to reassure themselves about risky behavior.

Here, better buy this for your woman to use when you are away travelling. Not only good against AIDS, it also helps avoid rape.

True. They may be recovering from the condition that brought the count down and had made them PREVIOUSLY sick (e.g. mononucleosis, pneumonia, varicella, sepsis, etc.). But don't be fooled, the count didn't go down because they were 100% healthy.

This anti-rape condom will end up with unfortunate girls killed by their enraged wanabe rapist...stupid idea

The (stupid) idea is nothing new, in some part of africa they are using some much simpler (and barbaric) devices: a cork with two razor blades, or some time simply the girl has her vagina sewed...
Oh well...i m having breakfast and will stop the description before I puke...

Really?

Please direct me to the studies that have been done on the T cell counts of healthy individuals.

Gary Null tested a hundred or so marathon runners a few days prior to running the New York marathon and based on their T cell counts all of them would have qualified for a diagnosis of aids.

They weren't sick, they were in the shape of their lives.

... I am no conspiracist, but I am digging into an organization claiming that the whole HIV-AIDs thing is a conspiracy... massive.

... a friend suggested that I read research published by the Alberta Reappraising AIDS Society... http://aras.ab.ca/.

... the claim is that there is no test that identifies the existence of actual HIV cells, commonly blamed for causing AIDS...they claim that tests now in use identify only inferential evidence that the HIV virus exists at all (eg. antibodies, other 'indicators' that something is going on there)... uncertain if this is common for other viruses in the virology biz.

... they claim that AIDS has other causes, and that the medical industry and governments are highly motivated to promote the deception that HIV causes AIDS, rather than digging for what they allege is the real cause of AIDS.

... the sources the organization cites do not appear as light-weights... will dig a bit more, but maybe someone can comment further on this.
