The way I do it is to sleep twice per day.  In BKK I sleep from 4:00 am to about 8:30 am, and then again from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Then when I get back I make sure to stay awake until about 9:00 pm and sleep until 6:30 am.  This puts me right back on a normal schedule.

According to US Military Medics:

When traveling West leave in the day and arrive in the evening, go to sleep at you normal time.

When going East leave in the evening and arrive in the Mid-afternoon, sleep at your normal time.

If you are going South to North or North to South, you are screwed unless you can sleep normally on Airplaines.

This is assuming an average flight length of 10 - 11 hours.

I do not know how they figured this out but it works for me.

I usually fly Thai Air from LAX to BKK. Now that plane leaves at 2:00 PM from LAX and arrives at 11:30. So if you can stay up on most of the flight and go right to bed when you arrive. Just like the above says you are right in sync and did not miss a beat. Now many bros want to make the best of their trip and may not want to sleep on the first night, but if you do you will be fresh and on Thai time from then on.

The problem for me is on the way back to LAX. The flight leaves at 7:30 AM so you are wide awake and then you land at 10:00 AM the same day at LAX. You are beat and its only 10:00 AM, by 5:00 PM you are dragging ass and then I just pass out and usually awake at 3:00 AM. It takes me about two weeks to adjust back to CA time.

Being a Northwest Coaster I agree and it seems the older I get the harder it is.

I am back 3 weeks and finally started feeling human yesterday.

Agree with aircrest et. al. - it just does not seem to get any easier coming home.

Maybe we should just stay in BKK?

Flying from Amsterdam with a six hour time difference is quite ok ...
I fly China Airlines (€ 150,- upgrade to business-class ) leave at around 3 pm ... eat a bit ... watch a movie ... sleep a bit ... and you arrive early in the morning ... maybe have a little nap and you're fine ...

On the way back the plane leaves around 3 am ... and you arrive early in the morning after a really long sleep ... just perfect ...

I must say this napping in the afternoon Balzahn Chen's idea) and sleeping less at night sounds quite good ... I'll try that the next time ...

Rezyek -

Lived in Amsterdam for 9 months - project at KLM!

Loved every day in AMS, especially running in the park during August - very fond memories.

I think I will fly to BKK via AMS the next trip and get over my jetlag along the canals....

Cheers!
