met a guy last night who was in bangkang for a couple of months (one of the stoopid swiss money forgers) could hardly recognize the man. he lost 50 kilos.

My first time living in bkk I lost about 3 kilos. My second time living in chiangmai I put on 3 kilos. For me it had more to do with being familiar with the food and knowing how to order a variety of stuff more than anything else.

Seems to me that the longer one stays here the more likely it is to gain weight. If one is a "newbie" then it is more likely to lose some kilos/lbs.
Longer stays equals less sweating out the calories because one learns to hop into air con. car and then dash into air con. building. (for me anyway). Extremely high % of thai food has very content of sugar and that goes for food that you dont realize has sugar in it! And the lack of diet soda at most thai establishments is a killer. Forget Atkins with so much sugar and rice everywhere.
Shorter stays usually means heavy partying and sweating out the cals. At least that is what I observe for myself.
So many good restaurants does not help.

Damn, I guess I must be one of the few farangs to have gained weight during my last 6 month hardship posting. I don't drink beer much (makes me feel like shit in the heat) so maybe too many colAHS and rice.
It came to a head one day when my TGF was taking photos of me at the computer in our apartment. She laughed and motioned me over to her camera. Then showed me the photos she'd taken of me sitting there, shirtless, with the ol' belly hangin' out.
Her comment, as she patted her hand on my stomach: "You know, my teelakja is hansum, but he has little bit PAUNCH!" This was followed by an Isaan cackle and a long laugh -- she was obviously amused with her humorous coup. Well, that was it, I ran down to Tesco Lotus and bought some dumbbells (which were hardly used after the 1st 30 days of my new fitness routine, lol).
Anyway, I'll be back again for another hardship posting soon, but will be laying off the rice this time. And hopefully swimming more. Funny, a few months in farangland and I'm back to my target weight. Maybe it was the easy life there... sitting with a colah while my TGF sweated away the day with the cooking, washing, and ironing...
