Refractive surgery has come a long way.   The procedure itself is pretty simple to perform.   However, what are you paying for is the experience of the surgeon who is making the decision.

The next improvement in refractive surgery will be the wavefront technology.    With wavefront technology, the high order aberration in the corneal will be corrected.   This will lead to a better quality of vision.   All the big refractive laser company has new wavefront laser on the market.  ( All are expected to get FDA approval within the next 6-12 month)    The technology and the laser is moving relatively quickly, therefore the consumer should ask question before they making an informed decision.

As you age you still require reading glasses, just like you would require bi-focals with glasses.

Lasik does not take care of loss of vision due to aging. Right?

Smegs,

Lasik does not cure presbyopia (inability to focus close up), which is a function of your eye's lens becoming less flexible with age.  In fact, you will need stronger reading glasses after the procedure, if you need them now.

As for the price being the same as the US, the TOP QUALITY places in BKK are about on a par, pricewise, with your bargain-basement, 'just got me a new Lasik machine, Goober' outlets in the US.

The $4500 quoted by another poster is a 'celebrity' practitioner; $1500-$1800 per eye is average for an experienced, high-volume othalmologist here in California (~150,000 baht).

The 52,000 (both eyes) at Bumrungrad is a good starting point.  Actually, Rutnin Eye Clinic, on Asoke, S. of Petchburi is about 20,000/eye, and I would trust them completely.  I went there three times during my last stay, twice for me, and once for my TGF, who couldn't resist me long enough for me to get rid of my 'ta daeng'  (I paid less for her exam, of course).

The young woman opthalmologist who treated me had done about 250 Lasik procedures, and was very thorough.

They, and their hospital, specialize in eye care, and were recommended highly by another health care professional I know.

I do not use glasses and always had perfect vision. But I am starting to wonder if I am getting to the point when I may need them soon, as now sometimes when there is little light I see myself shifting what I am trying to look at in search of more light.

I guess this is the first blow that is telling me I am no longer a young buck.

The cost in Canada (Vancouver) by one of the top rated North American clinics is 1600 CAD (B48 000), for both eyes, they have done over 20 000 operations and have a very good reputation. I am going to have mine done in a few weeks and can finally toss the glasses and contacts.

- Refractive surgery cannot prevent loss of vision due to aging. And how could it, as it is just a fixation of the current imperfections of the eye lense?

- There are basically three different methods - LASIK, PRK and LTK. LASIK, being the most popular, has also the most unwanted side effects. Depending on which study you read, the percentage of "not perfect operations" with resulting halos, stars and other complications is in the range of 5-10%. But this figure seems to be decreasing constantly, and new technologies reduce the risk further.

- In Germany, this price is currently between 3,500 and 4,200 Euros for the full treatment (2 eyes) including post-operation treatment, which can be *rather* important in the unwanted worst case or just in case of mild irritations which are not uncommen. So the treatment in Thailand is significantly cheaper, although one has to wonder whether the machines are really well kept and how good the post-operation treatment is - and can you afford to stay several more weeks/months if anything goes wrong?

- The state-of-the-art is the wavefront technology, which theorectically allows to improve quality of vision beyond 20/20. Over here, many clinics are already using this technology for a while (Domestic laser instruments are considered to be currently the best and most advanced world-wide.) The latest studies show that wavefront only rarely leads to above 100% vision quality, and even in such rather few cases only with specific distances and wave lengths, i. e. colors of light. But it turns out that the wavefront treatment reduces the risk of halos and"stars" significantly, so it is definitely the technology to choose...

I'm actually very interested in such a treatment. But I will probably wait a couple of more years until better long-term studies will become available, the risks are further reduced and wavefront will be further improved and perfectioned.

... And I would rather spend a bit more money for a domestic treatment than take any risks with my probably most valuable and most important organ by trying to be Cheap Charlyin a LOS eye clinic...

Just my 2 cents,

Cheers,
Fritz

I had LASIK performed on both my eyes about two years ago.  The cost was US$3,600 for both eyes (The ophthalmologist gave me a 10% discount because I was referred to him by an old family friend who was also an ophthalmologist.  Otherwise, it would have cost US$4,000).  The ophthalmologist was one of the best in the state and he did the surgery and all the pre and post op care/examinations personally.  The last post op examination was performed 6 months after the surgery.

There were less expensive alternatives, such as LASIK clinics, but the surgery and the pre and post op examinations may not be performed by the same doctor in these clinics.  I don't think it's relevant how many operations a clinic has performed, unless all the surgery is performed by the same surgeon.  Since I only have one pair of eyes, I did not mind paying a bit more for the experience and quality of care.  I am satisfied with the result (one eye having 20/20 and the other is 20/25).  My doctor warned me before the surgery and I did noticed after the sugery that I was not able to focus on anything less than 6 inches away from my eyes.  I imagine that I will need reading glasses as I get older.

Also, for various reasons, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure.  I want an honest opinion from a reputable doctor to tell me if I should have the procedure done or not and not from a production line clinic that only cares about the money I pay because they need high volume to support its low fees.
