I used to get sucked in by the value for money, shiny lobbies, pretty staff etc, but now I just want to see a decent doctor who wont prescribe every medicine under the sun. I've done BNH, Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital. Not sure where to next...

Just a few words regarding Bumrungrad Hospital. Had to attend the emergency clinic on Saturday night after my food poisioning decided I was a nice candidate for a long stay. Ok, it was an open and shut case but I was impressed by the level of service, careful diagnosis and action taken. Had to be rehydrated overnight and part of the next day, routine stuff, but well executed. They even arranged for a 1.00am meal for the gf from a local vendor....delivered to the bedside!!! Nothing but praise for them. Consulted with my buddy after he arrived back from Phuket on sunday......he is an ED Consultant in a Sydney hospital, he also could not fault the care I received and also confirmed the great reputation this hospital has. regards Tuck

QQ: The Saudi government banned it's nationals from freely traveling to LOS after the killing of three diplomats (as I recall in 1989) and the theft of several million dollars of jewelry from a member of the Saudi Royal family by a Thai laborer. The local police caught the Thai worker, recovering some of the jewelry. It was returned to the Princess and found to be paste. The real jewelry was then seen to be worn by the wife of a Thai police general at a party. This pissed the Saudi's off mightily so they said none of their nationals could travel to LOS unless they had an approval from the MOI of Saudi. The assassination of the three diplomats was related to Thai work visas and the always profitable recruiting game. The ban has effectively been lifted now.

Received from a friend today. June 21, 2007 Dear Friends, Colleagues, my dear Students and Parents from over the many years. My purpose in writing this to all of you is to ask you for your assistance to send an email of support for me to the proper Bumrungrad Hospital authorities. I don’t know if this is appropriate or not, but I am so deeply disappointed and saddened at Bumrungrad’s callous and heartless response to the grossly negligent harm and grievous pain they have caused me that I am asking you to help me out with an email campaign to the CEO of Bumrungrad Hospital and others responsible. I was asked by Peter Morley, International Patient Services Director, not to get a lawyer and I didn’t, thinking Bumrungrad is an honorable institution and would do the right thing by me. Unfortunately, in preliminary discussions with Mack Banner, Chief Executive Officer, at this point, I am being offered a slap in the face, basically one months salary in compensation for the extreme pain, suffering, and mental anguish I and my wife and daughter have undergone solely due to the gross negligence and malpractice of Bumrungrad Hospital. As you know in America, settlement for such a gross act of negligence could run into millions of dollars. I certainly do not expect anything remotely like that. I have even offered to be a spokesman for Bumrungrad if they would do the right thing by me. Something like, “Mistakes were made, but that happens, and Bumrungrad has done the right things to right the wrongs.” But, instead Bumrungrad management chooses to think deeply inside the petty, greedy, selfish little box and kick the little guy around rather than to do the right thing, the generous and kind thing, to follow the right path. For those of you who are not aware of what happened, I had a partial colonectomy, or colectomy, (The surgeon removed part of my large intestine.) on February 6, 2007 at Bumrungrad Hospital. The basic surgery went well. Two months later I had rather severe pains in my abdomen. I went to the hospital and was told no problem, patted on the back, and shuffled out the door. Other than a couple thumps on my tummy, no tests were performed at all. The pains did largely, but not completely, go away in a few days. Two months later the pains came back with a vengeance. I went to my regular doctor, who immediately sent me for ultrasound and x-rays. In very short order it was found that surgical gauze had been left inside me during the original operation. It had caused such infection that there was a large abscess which had actually damaged some small intestinal tissue which had to be removed and my small intestine reattached. Bumrungrad seems to be taking the attitude that they have repaired the damage so no harm no foul and is offering a token settlement for my extreme, prolonged pain and suffering, loss of family companionship, mental anguish on my part as well as my wife and daughter, etc. They seem to take a callous attitude toward pain bordering on torture level as though it is a dramatization, a fiction. I would say this: Again, to try to bring this into your hearts and minds as a real world personal experience, not just some intellectual abstract: What would it be worth to you if someone asked, “How much would I have to pay you to cut open your abdomen, cut out part of your intestines, and basically put you through several days of torture level pain?” Really. How much would you want to be payed? What would it be worth? Something very substantial, I would imagine. My original colon surgery was by far the most horrible physical experience I have ever had in my 57 years of life. I prayed afterward that I would never have to experience that again in my entire life. Now here I am four months later experiencing as bad, if not worse pain and frustration. Do I want monetary compensation? Of course I do! Do I think I’m being greedy? Absolutely not! I have suffered a great deal of pain and anguish. I have watched my wife sitting on the couch crying inconsolably. My daughter has asked me if I am going to die. The wealthy powers that be think it’s adequate to say oops, but you’re healing ok now, right? No harm done. It seems Bumrungrad does not care to do the right thing for its patients. It only cares about saving a few Baht for its already wealthy board members, such as Chai Suponpanich, and major shareholders such as: 1.Bangkok Insurance Pcl.95,966,50213.15 2.HSBC (Singapore) Nominees Pte. Ltd.73,299,50010.04 3.Sinsuptawee Asset Management Co., Ltd.63,258,5148.66 4.Thai NVDR Co., Ltd.43,637,0945.98 5.Istithmar PJSC43,370,7435.94 6.UOB Kay Hian Private Limited30,920,3904.24 7.Wattanasophonpanich Co., Ltd.25,121,8753.44 8.Littledown Nominees Limited 924,615,1003.37 9.Citibank Nominees Singapore Pte. Ltd.-Aranda Investments Pte. Ltd.21,685,3722.97 10.TLS Alpha Ptd. Ltd.21,685,3712.97 Do I want retribution? No, I simply want fair compensation for what I have suffered – twice. I truly used to be a deeply loyal Bumrungrad patient. People would talk about Samitiwej, Bangkok General, etc. and I would always defend Bumrungrad as the best. What I ask my dear friends and colleagues, my many dear students and parents from over all these years to do is simply to email your thoughts and feelings to the following responsible people: Mack Banner, CEO mack.banner@bumrungrad.com Dr. Peter Morley Medical Director – International peter.morley@bumrungrad.com I am trying to compile other contacts, but it is simply not as transparent as in the U.S.A. Almost everyone I have talked to about it has the same incredulous response that such a thing could actually happen – and at the high and mighty Bumrungrad! Most people say this is something you hear about or read about, but never really think it happens. Strangely enough, it seems to be my Thai friends who are far more outraged than my farang friends! Bumrungrad constantly touts itself as an international class hospital. Shouldn’t it hold itself to at least quasi-international standards when it commits negligence and malpractice. You shouldn’t be able to have it both ways. So, I would deeply appreciate it if you could send a few words on my behalf or even just forward this letter to the above referenced individuals.

I am not saying this didn't happen but it sure seems like many internet email scams. Anyone can send anything they want now on the internet. This could be true but it also could not be true.

cry, cry, woo, woo... sob story. Is it possible? Sure. Is it entirely, and 100% the hospital's fault? Not at all. What's the most obvious and oft repeated point in this 'tragic' story? "I want money". F... that - caveat emptor.

If you have the proof, you may get an Asian or even a Thai publication to write a story about your experience and that would put pressure on BMGRD. And a malpractice lawsuit would be appropriate too I would think. Does the surgeon have malpractice insurance ? Good Luck.
