You have to pay at government hospitals but the fees are ridiculously low.
For an eye operation better go to a private hospital or good clinic; they are good quality and still very very low prices. Try Rutnin eye hospital on Asok; I've been there -paid little but got excellent treatment!

As a permanent resident of LoS, I would suggest that you never go to a government hospital. Lets just leave it at that.

Rutnin on Asoke seem very good and up with the play - I got a thorough check up once when I got a tad worried, but seems just a case of LOS dust/grime/ + stronger ultaviolet light here, and of course charging around on motorcycle taxis no help - in any case, they were very good, and cheap - as to hospitals, well, again can't complain, - had the baby delivered at Rama-tip-o-di, the best care attention you could ask for, and total charge after 3 days, was 3000bt !  Clinics on the other hand, do seem to overcharge, and under achieve.

Pay and suggest go to Bumrungrad , Sukhumvit, Soi 3, as they have a very good eye clinic on the third floor. I have been their.

You only get one chance with your eyes, so pay for the best service you can get or take a flight home to UK or where ever.

Bamrungrad in Nana Nua is certanly the best in Thailand but there are other hospitals such as Bangkok Hospital in Petchubri Rd or the Camillian in Tong Lor and the Smithiwet in Sukhumvit 49 that offer very good and professional services up to international standards....and much more affordable than the Bamrungrad......this said from my personal experience...
Cheers

Craigoz:  Most of Thailand's hospitals are much better than the shoddy British ones; especially the ones you get paid by the national insurance. If I were to live in UK I would take a plane to fly to Thailand with problem that needs hospital treatment....
When I lived in UK I immediately left for home when I had any health problem..
That's why the hospital- or health tourism is so popular, extraordinarily successful and one of the biggest growth industries for Thailand..

I'm a big fan of BNH on soi convent by patpong

better nurses and cheaper than Bumrungrad
Doctors at Bumrungrad have more US board certifications though - the rest of the staff is generally clueless

Agree about BNH - had a knee op there last year - the rooms are more luxurious than Bumrungrad and the ancillary staff have better spoken English.  About 10% cheaper too (the fees, not the nurses!).

Apart from the above 2, not too impressed with the rest, though Bangkok Hospital is excellent.  Ultimately for the non-Thai-speaking patient, quality of spoken English is paramount, and most hospitals do tend to let themselves down in this respect.  Even the most expensive - Bumrungrad - is ludicrously cheap by Western standards.
