Confirmation of NZ swine fever cases expected within week

WELLINGTON (AFP) — Confirmation is expected this week on whether 10 New Zealand high school students have been infected by a potentially deadly new strain of swine fever, the country's health minister said Monday.
Ten students out of a group of 22 pupils and three teachers from an Auckland school who returned from Mexico on Saturday tested positive for influenza and were likely to have swine fever, Health Minister Tony Ryall announced Sunday.
He said confirmation could take days.
"We think it's certainly within the week, I think it has got to be treated with some priority because particularly the families want to know," Ryall told Radio New Zealand on Monday.
"As I've said, the advice we've received is it is probable these kids have swine flu and that's why we have taken the arrangements we have."
Samples from the students have been sent to a World Health Organisation (WHO) laboratory in Melbourne, Australia.
Mexican authorities have so far reported 20 confirmed deaths from swine flu and have said another 61 suspect deaths are being investigated as the WHO warned of "pandemic potential".
New Zealand authorities said attempts were being made to trace others among the 364 Air New Zealand passengers on the flight from Los Angeles which flew the affected Rangitoto College students home.
Ryall said however that none of the affected pupils had become seriously ill.
"The good news is the symptoms have not been serious, I've been advised that these kids are on the road to recovery," he said.

Well, I'll be canceling my trip down to Mexico planned for next weekend :-(
The common factor, so far, appears to be Mexico as the source of 'patient zero' for sure - personally, as was pointed out in the article pasted by CalEden, I feel this just an unfortunate mutation, particularly as the expert claimed that combined human-swine-avian flu is rather common in Asia.
Hence, it stands to reason that it is possible in other areas of the world, given the proper conditions - seems Mexico just got 'lucky' (meant sarcastically), plus combined with other environmental factors common to Mexico, which facilitated the spread and initial development.

If billions was not been wasted on a useless
drugs war, and that money spend on
something usefull like public health then this might not have happened. Unfortunately the mexican government like a lot of the world have their head up their arses on priority's. Now the religious idiots will say its god punishing our un-moralistic society - as they have done since the beginning of time. You just have to believe and the ark will save you.yer right.
But they also have their head up their arses. All problems man made just like the credit crunch. So if we are all made in gods image that means, oops another fairy tale bites the dust.
Their are also just too many people on this planet so nature will fight back with war, disease and natural selection i.e survival of the fitest.
This is also like war a great distraction for governments away from the usual f*** up they are making.

As discussed on the Bob Brinker radio show Sat. and Sun. the out break was timed at the same time Barack Obama visited Mexico City. An Mexican official that the president met with has since died of the influenza, so a bio-terrorist attack is not beyond the realm off possibility

That is treatment, not prevention. Treatment when you have symptoms means you already got it. Thus to late too talk about prevention for the individual with symptoms.
Though mostly right (the posts), I have to pick on the details as I cannot let go being a perpetually punctilious and supercilious pedant.
