Most school are now closed in Hong Kong and airlines are reducing their Hong Kong flights. With the growing incidence of SARS in China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, and Canada (hospitals closed in Toronto), how many of you really believe the current Thai statistics?

Any update on the airport status in Bangkok? I have a friend coming from NA via Narita, Japan and he is worried he will be quarantined for 24 hours or worse... An article in the Bangkok post claimed they even quarantine ENTIRE flights if they "suspect" SARS. What the hell does THAT mean anyway?..."Suspect"..."DOn't try to enter Bangkok/SEA if you have a bad cold?"

according to bloomberg: with effect form today all incoming flights from hk, singapore, vietnam, taiwan and china will be checked for SARS. that means all passengers on those planes have to undergo a screening and test! should extend immigration procedures a lot for those passengers!

There was quite a drop in confirmed cases of SARS in HK today - down to about 25 from nearly 80 yesterday. News reports also indicate it may be slowing down in Guangdong Province. The problem in HK has been the one housing estate with a very high infection rate. The mechanism for the spread of the infection in this estate still hasn't been identified - maybe water, sewage contamination or airborne, although the last option is unlikely according to my medic friends. All schools are closed this week and it seems a good bet that they will remain closed next week. Screening at Bangkok Airport unless they have a diagnostic test (BTW, the one here takes 8 hours to produce results) is not likely to be effective as the incubation period can be up to 10 days, and getting visitors from HK and China to wear masks all the time is just an invitation for people to cancel - which may be the intention. This bug is nasty but may become less virulent in the coming weeks as it is passed on. My major concern in Thailand would be the availability of suitable treatment (I think ribavarin(?) and steroids are working here pretty well except for those weakened by other conditions - but not for pregnant women as it may cause birth deformities and, for more serious cases, serum from infected patients), plus, it spread in a hospital here through the use of nebulisers to treat infected patients. The situation here in HK shows this infection is not following the normal epidemic pattern - if it really is that contagious then in a city of 6.8 million we should have had far more confirmed cases by now. Plus the mortality rate is holding steady at around 3%, only one below the age of 40 I think. But take care if it gets into the community - I think my trip to LOS later this month will be off - can't sup Kloster through a face mask!

Indeed, so am I. What is going on at Don Muang airport? Do they let you though if you are not arriving from an "infected" country, or do they stop you anyway? I heard that a 24-hour quarantine is in order if they THINK you have it. North America just has a few quick questions by comparison.

SO BE CAREFUL ON YOUR FLIGHT TO/FROM LOS WHO: SARS Has Spread on Only Four Flights BEIJING (AP) - The World Health Organization says only 16 of the more than 7,800 people infected worldwide with SARS got the disease while aboard an airplane and that all of those cases came before airlines began screening passengers for symptoms....

They just announced on the news in the US that the Thai Government is offering a $100,000 reward to anyone that can prove they contacted SARS in Thailand. This is in response to Tourism being down last month approximately 60% - a way to make the traveler feel safer going to Thailand. michaelb
