...and of course, because it can't be suggested often enough, shave your armpits.

Your odor is caused by bacteria, clinging to your hairs, and multiplying there (nice environment to have baccilus families). Reduce the amount of surface area (i.e. hair), and thus reduce the amount of bacteria, and you reduce the amount of smell. Combine that with the rock anti-perspirant (which prevents sweat from sticking around), and you end up with next to nil bacteria, and thus next to nil smell.

I swear by it.

I am actually considering having them removed permanently.

I think this was covered in another thread so I shall now go and UTFSE.

Yep, bacteria is the culprit growing on the sugars contained in our sweat, along with some stronger food odors excreted after eating. Shave the area, reduce red meats, mineral stone, and when traveling, I use the alchohol-based hand sanitizers to kill the bacteria - a quick wash with it in the toilet does the trick. Works great.

An ex-wife of mine was Korean and they have a term for us that we smell like cows - our beef heavy diets. I quit eating red meat several years ago after a long, slow, hot, and terribly smelly ride with two farangs that reeked of beef smell. No shit. Decided I could do not smelling like that....

Anyway, try the hand sanitizers. But not after shaving there...OUCH!!!!

John NM,

I got told the same thing when I was working in Malaysia, that I smelt of milk? At the time I didnt realise but my diet was alot of milk and cheese. After about two weeks of eating Malay food they said now you smell like use.

You can always tell the dude who has eat Durian, especially when he's taken a piss.

Bye the way, if you shave your armpit hairs wont they grow back thicker next time?

Glosteyboy,

Nope, that's an "old wives' tale." Your armpit and crotch hairs act as a natural lubricant to prevent chaffing when moving your arms and legs. But they are also stinky culprits too. This means the hairs get worn down naturally. When you cut 'em, the hair growing out appears more coarse (and hence the idea you've got more hair) ; if it's left alone, after awhile, it'll chafe and look the same as before. Of course, as you get older, most men start to grow hair in all sorts of strange places.

I am seriously considering laser hair removal in a couple of places as a solution to longstanding "problems" in the tropics, lol! Have already done my back one time at Bumrungrad, about a 50% reduction with just that one pass. The technology has gotten much better with the new lasers.

Ditto to what Balls has said -- no more or less thicker than before.

Agreed - I'm also considering a laser solution to permanently eradicate some hairlines that bother me -- not so much under the armpits (I might want those to grow back for colder climates), but more like errant hairs on knuckles or ears. Plucking those is getting to be a hassle.

John NM,

I think that your comment on smelling like cows is not entirely correct.

Recently I spent some time in Chennai (the Hindu Bible Belt) and beef of any time was simply unavailable, even in the hotels.

Many of the people there (especally since there was a severe water shortage and most water was trucked in) did not bathe daily and I can say that their smell was exactly like that of an unwashed farang. To wit; it was not the cow.

On the other hand, the spices we eat are extruded via our sweat and unine, particulary those taken in excess. My Korean sister-in-law loves Jalipenios and Kimchi and she does carry a distinct odor because of that, but certainly not that of a unwashed person.

Possibly the cow smell spoken of by your ex-wife was a lack of Kimchi smell instead...

Disclaimer

No offense intended to your ex-wife.

The best remedy, for me. is to use a natural product. I have no idea what it's called in English (In Thai Sahm Som) but it's a mineral stone. You can buy it either as a chunk or as a stick (just like deodorant).

Very inexpensive and it works usually for the whole day.

Yes, it is called "Tawas" in Philippines and have used it - it works wonders. It also comes in powedered form and can bought from any pharmacy or department store.
