Quote: from Valetta on 7:43 pm on Mar. 7, 2010 That foolish people habitually do foolish things is a given. Even sensible people occasionally do foolish things. In either case it is surely a matter for regret. To find in either something of "beauty"suggests a lack of compassion for human weakness to which all of us are susceptible at one time or another. Not to have compassion is a serious character fault.
The BTF resident Sociopath DaffyDuck. Valetta, great post!

I do not have compassion for morons inflicting their own miseries upon themselves, in full awareness of doing so. You seem to be confused on the value of compassion.

Daffy,I suggest it is rare for somebody to inflict harm upon himself with full advance knowledge of the consequences. There is usually considerable ambivalence with often competing and contradictory motives. A lack of self worth,a belief that punishment is deserved, and through punishment some sort of redemption will be achieved may be combined in a way which at the time makes sense to the person, but little sense to a detached observer. The point I am trying to make is that the reasons why persons engage in actions which harm them are usually complex, and if we condemn their actions out of hand it denies us the opportunity of investigating the reasons for those actions, and offering those persons a way of avoiding future self harm. Your attitude takes us back to pre Freudian times when the subconscious was a closed book.

http://www.oddee.com/item_96982.aspx Aside from the above link, let me ask you : " Been to Thailand, lately? Walked down Sukhumwit after midnight? Walked around Pattaya? " I can understand your argument about someone who has never drank any alcohol before in their life, and finds themselves drunk at the end of the night. Your argument does not carry water for habitual and repeat drunks - the kind that start the day off with beers, the kind that drink themselves into a drunken stupor every night.

Huh? Why would you bother, or care? If they are adults, they should know enough to be able to gauge actions and resultant consequences. If they are unable to do that, it is not my job to correct the failures of their parents. My attitude is simply that these kind of people are good for only one thing : entertainment (as long as you can stay out of their harm's way). They serve absolutely no other purpose (well, ignoring providing CO2 to plants, maybe).

Job stress got to me a few years back. Doctor prescribed a small dosage of Amitriptyline; just 5mg. And suggested that I take a single Tylenol PM with it at bedtime. Has been working ever since. Only time I am able to skip them and still sleep is when I am in LOS.

Daffy,it is one of the better human virtues to help those who are in real need, whatever the reason. It is called charity. A truly charitable person extends charity to the apparently undeserving as well as the deserving. To be without charity as well as compassion really are serious character faults.

I am truly, truly, truly, truly, truly, truly, truly, truly, truly glad that people with such great charitable and compassionate dispositions such as yourself exist in this world. It is awesome that you have so much free time available to yourself that you can expend it upon those who do not appreciate it, and don't feel they need it. Truly, these are grandiose character traits, and I am truly glad to someone like yourself has them.

... because it helps balance out those like myself, who appear to have a better triage compass, and don't give a rat's ass about the undeserving, with self-inflicted problems. Good for you. I'd light a candle in the window for you, if I did such a thing.
