For those who wonder what he is trying to say, the issue is sensitivity vs. specificity. ELISA is the sensitive test for ANTIBODIES, and Western Blot is the specific test. Antibody response is highly variable, leading to uncertainty in test validity, so the figure of 3 months, and sometimes 6 months, is thrown out as an outer limit.
PCR (invented by my former neighbor)-based tests detect the virus itself by producing enough copies of it to exceed the threshold of detection in vitro.
Porno producers (also my neighbors) REQUIRE a PCR-based test for all their 'stars' before they can work...
Strangely, my former neighbor Kary Mullis, Nobel Prize winner, is a leading proponent of the 'HIV doesn't cause AIDS' flat-earth society, when he can remember where he is.

I have FINALLY passed the 3-month window period for HIV, since a little scare I had in LOS, and received a negative HIV test today. That 3 month wait felt like the longest in my life. Even though I was negative all along, the negative confirmation makes me feel like I have a new lease on life. One thing for certain is that the simple act of taking the test will DEFINITELY cause me to be more careful in the future! Now, if I can just get rid of this recurring NGU that neither Zithromax nor Erithromycin can seem to kick.
