Mexico outbreak traced to 'manure lagoons' at pig farm

Finally some facts - thanks for posting this, albeit you might also want to read beyond the headline, as part of the article reads " “We deny completely that the influenza virus affecting Mexico originated in pigs because it has been scientifically demonstrated that this is not possible.”"

Either way, another interesting piece of the puzzle.

But iDuck,

Unlike you (and I have this from an excellent source) I have not had any trouble in keeping the weight off. Ego, if you are looking for a swine I suggest that possibly you should look in a mirror.
Yikes, I'm just gonna move away from that raw nerve of yours I obviously touched...

You might also want to take that with a pinch of salt, as that is being said by someone with a vested interest in pigs, someone from the pig farming industry.

First case about to be reported ?

Thai woman being tested for swine flu
By: BangkokPost.com
Published: 28/04/2009 at 04:54 PM A 42 year-old hospital worker who developed a fever after returning from a seminar in Mexico earlier this month is in quarantine at Chulalongkorn hospital and being tested for possible swine flu.

The woman, who works at Chulalongkorn hospital, went to Mexico from April 3 to 11 to attend a seminar. She suffered feverish flu symptoms from Thursday and Sunday, Chulalongkorn hospital director, Dr Thirapong Charoenvit, said on Tuesday.

She went to the hospital for treatment on Tuesday. Her body temperature was 37 degrees Celsius, he said.

Dr Thirapong said she was being monitored closely at the hospital. Laboratory tests would determine whether she had picked up the swine flu virus or was suffering from another strain of influenza.

The name of the woman was being withheld.

As of Tuesday, officials in Mexico reported 152 swine-flu deaths, and 40 cases of infection had been reported in the USA.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that the virus is now too "widespread to make containment a feasible" strategy.

Mexico, epicentre of the outbreak, said 152 people were believed to have died from swine flu with more than 1,600 people suspected to be carrying the virus. Twenty of the deaths have been confirmed by laboratory tests.

The number of confirmed cases in the United States more than doubled to 44 and Britain and Spain both said they had registered patients sick with swine flu in what was the first cases in Europe.

Canada has six cases, while Israel and New Zealand confirmed their first swine flu cases. Suspected victims were being kept under surveillance from Australia (70 cases) to Sweden and Switzerland which had five each.

In Bangkok, the cabinet on Tuesday agreed to set up a special panel chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasat to supervise swine-flu prevention measures and coordinate with foreigh health authorities in preventing a global pandemic.

Thailand began strict swine flu prevention measures on Monday after the World Health Organsation issued a global warning.

These include use of thermal scanners to monitor arriving passengers at Suvarnabhumi, Phuket and Chiang Mai international airports. The scanners look for high body temperatures that indicate a possible fever.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut has instructed the Livestock Development Department to set up a "war room" to monitor the outbreak and come up with any other necessary measures to prevent the swine virus mutating further and spreading.

The Mexican virus at the centre of the global scare is a mutation of common swine flu and capable of human-to-human transfer.

If anything you read in the local press can be trusted then the panic is over and Thailand is once again the safest place on earth where hotels are slashing prices, tourists are being encouraged to visit and friendly smiling Thais are waiting to give us great customer service. WALOB! (generally not just swine flu related)

Doctors: Woman free of swine flu
By: BangkokPost.com
Published: 29/04/2009 at 11:46 AM Laboratory tests conducted on a 42-year-old Thai woman who was quarantined on Tuesday for possible swine-flu infection showed that she is free from the deadly virus, a hospital official said on Wednesday.

Two tests were made on samples from the woman. She was found to be suffering from ordinary human flu, Chulalongkorn Hospital virus speciaist Dr Yong Pooworawan said at a press conference.

The woman was admitted to Chulalongkorn hospital on Tuesday after having a fever since last Thursday, after arriving back from Singapore. Her trip had earlier taken her to Mexico and the USA between April 3 and 19.

On Tuesday, the Public Health Ministry issued a warning that travellers should avoid going to Mexico or the USA if possible.

...or, catch a bout of the swine flu right now, deliberately infecting yourself, in order to build somewhat of a semi-immunity against a future mutated strain....

... which I might have been lucky enough to have had already, if my symptoms from last week were any indication (matched some of the specific symptoms of this strain, albeit I haven't consciously been in touch with anyone from Mexico - then again, we right next door to it). Then again, I doubt it - unless this thing is quietly spread further than anticipated.
