We have much better herd immunity in the US, than the population in Mexico, which might explain why the effects are less severe on the US, than they are in Mexico.

Quote: from thailife on 11:34 am on May 2, 2009 Simple stuff really. I quite admire viruses.
Virii are actually, IMO, the best demonstration for why the Universe does not require a 'god' to create 'intelligent design' or some such crap - virii are almost entirely a purely mechanical system of evolution (meaning, they do not require any 'intelligence' or life of their own -- it's all done via the host, and by altering the biological components the host provides in a purely mechanical manner. Tremendously fascinating processes...

I am going to digress a lot here, but the door was opend in that direction in the post above. I do not believe any of the religious stuff about God, etc. Thus my views on the matter may be more aligned with DD and others here that very OFTEN voice their opinion about why religions are absurd and it makes no sense to believe that God exists. However, I do disagree with the approach that many non-believers (like DD above) take. I understand, and respect, that many people are very very very very honestly religious. They have a faith, which I do not have. And faith is something that is not to be reasoned about with the faithful. Because by definition... well, you have to make a leap of faith to believe those things. What I see often and annoys me is that many non-believers, make a point of reminding the believers that their beliefs make no sense. I do think that they make no sense, but I keep that to myself and try to only talk about religion with people who tend to think like me, or who if they are religious respect my position the same as I respect theirs. I think it shows something else about the true character of those who at every chance bring the up the topic just to annoy and call stupid people of faith. I have close family members (mostly older generation) on both sides of the matter. And although I do not believe in God, every time there is a heated discussion about the topic (about which I try to say nothing) in one of those big family gatherings, I end up feeling more sympathy and empathy towards the religious ones. It is always the non-believers the ones that start the discussion trying to make the others feel stupid for their beliefs. It is more annoying to the faithful to have and atheist or agnostic to ridicule religion, than it is to an atheist to have a believer preaching them. My point is, lets carry on and try avoiding annoying people for their beliefs, just for the sake of boosting our own egos. I am sure that there are people here in this forum that are very serious about their faith and dislike the ever recurring mention about the reasons why some think God must not exist. Although I do not understand it, I acknowledge that there are smart people who believe in God. It doesn't make sense to me... but it doesn't have to make sense for me to respect them, get along with them, and be their friends. Hey! Even in my own family members there are believers, and I do not love them less for that. Congratulations to the members of the forum who have a faith (there must be many - it is just a matter of statistics) for not falling into the trap of retorting to those who keep every so often ridiculing religion. In summary, I suggest that we all stay away from discussing religion here because it is one topic where no side would ever convince the other. Thus the only reason to bring up the subject would be annoy those that have different views. And thus I have spoken.

The media just love to scare the shit out of us and they feed upon each other turning all the worlds news into one story. It's all fueled by hype, misinformation, and speculation. Lets calm down here, how many people have croaked worldwide ? 100 maybe ? Shit, 36,000 people die of the garden variety flu each year in the States alone ! It's time for some perspective. wj

Quote: from quack quack on 1:23 pm on May 2, 2009 - I too have nothing against people who follow specific religions, what I resent utterly is people trying to inflict their own religious beliefs on any other individual.
Fine. However, often for those people that you mention above to pop up, all you need to do is to go an look for them. And a very good way to find them is for you to voice out in the open your views, without anyone having asked you (like DD does above) ; the fanatics will then respond... and then you will have the nasty discussion you were looking for. The respectful tolerating ones, will rarely respond to provocation, unless they already happen to know each other and are in an environment where they cannot easily avoid it (like a family gathering). Again looking to pick up a fight with fanatics, or to flatter your own ego by showing off your debating skills, but do not know how to find them? Go out in the open and ridicule their beliefs; then they will show up. Once that happens, the normal people around you will think you are as much a fanatic as those other people.

Just as the 'believers' do in a more passive-aggressive manner. I understand the point you are trying to make, but can you explain to me why specifically religion and religious views needs to be a kind of taboo subject at all times, and people of religious faith need to be 'respected', and that you consider it better to just say nothing. Interestingly, this is a general social stigma, when it comes to religion, the PC resolution is to 'respectfully agree to disagree', or to 'respect the faith / belief'. Oddly enough, that same suggestion does not appear to prevail when it comes to political discussions, where it is entirely okay, if not encouraged, to voice opposing views, and the ad nauseam bickering over political favorites is regarded with a kindly nod; ditto when it comes to philosophical debates, or those dealing with economics, and even varying opinions on medical treatments or conditions - somehow, there, it's okay to take off the gloves, and join in the fun... Yet, somehow when it comes to religion, we are supposed to treat with kid gloves and respect individuals that are dumb, lack intelligence, and have turned their back on common sense and practical logic -- not only are we supposed to respect these cretins, but we are supposed to sit by, and nod gently and agreeably, while they try to smother others with their retarded and medieval views... Why is that? Maybe you can explain that to me. My attitude has little to do with ego (albeit I will be the first to admit that I have a well developed one) but rather that I simply do not like, nor tolerate, dumb unintelligent individuals.
