I was surprised a search of the threads did not turn up one regarding jet lag....

Help - who has a cure!  I really need one………..

==============================================================

You would think that after as many international flights as I have taken, I would have found a way around this.

The flight from HKK to LAX is a killer.  It takes me 2 weeks to resemble normality...

I thought I had it solved this trip.  I had the 30-minute Oxygen Massage at Don Maung.  The oxygen was great, the massage literally brought tears to my eyes.

I guess I was used to the velvet touch of the soapies and the oil massages - this lady was for real. She was bigger than I was and used her elbows to literally re-arrange my spine.  I had to bite my tongue to keep from being a woozy and screaming.  I have not been in that much pain since I went through my divorce 13 years ago - or was it the hemorrhoid?  I always have trouble distinguishing between the two!

To make matters worse, part two of my plan was not fall asleep on the flight.  I was ecstatic to find I had the emergency aisle seat – plenty of legroom – until I found the seat back would not recline.  As the plane was full, my whining was ignored.  Of course, Halfway through the flight, I fall asleep for 6 hours.

I had trouble getting out of bed the next afternoon – my ass was killing me.  I know I did not get that drunk to mistaken a katoey for a real BG.   I finally went to my doctor and his technician gave me an X-ray.  She started laughing and called for the doctor.  He also started laughing and called his entire staff to view the object of mirth – me.

They took a Polaroid, as I didn’t believe them.  I had a bruise the exact shape of the notched end of the seat belt on my tailbone!

How dumb can a guy be?  Six hours sleeping on their seat belt! -

Final diagnosis – severely bruised tail bone.

Where is my sweet, young TG to minister to me in my hour of need?  To rub salve on my aching tailbone.  I hope a katoey in disguise doesn’t slip through or we both will be in deep shit!

I am serious regarding the cure for jet lag - if any......

as i seem to remember  from some medical programme

that the old human body can only adjust  1 hr per day  from your time zone to your new time zone

so for me i start to change my sleep patterns about a week before by going to bed 30 mins earlier each night and getting up 30 mins earlier each day  so my body starts to get in sink with thailand (sorry i should have said i live in the uk it might well be the other way round for you)

this works for me so when i hit thailand i usually pretty in sink

...when i travel to LOS i always go at night, depart around 9:30 p.m. then once in the air, just before the first meal take 2 night nurse capsules, then after the meal i sleep for 3 - 4 hours, wake up, have a meal\ drink, then sleep again for 3 - 4 hours, so when i arrive in LOS i have a good 7 - 8 hrs sleep behind me.

(Night Nurse capsules are v effective!)

However, I have realised that my waking hours in LOS are actually very similar to the UK, in that in the UK i go to bed at 12 wake up at 7, LOS being 7 hrs in front, i go to bed at 7 a.m. wake up at  2p.m. So i guess i'm lucky, i don't really suffer from jet lag, unless i don't sleep on the plane !

Unfortunately, the only thing that works for me is trying to stay awake as long as possible, so that by the time the next real night rolls around (whenever that may be), I fall asleep exhausted. Seems to screw me up so much that my clock resets a little faster.

Have been experimenting with an OTC herbal relaxant called Alluna, which helps me relax for 4 hours sleep periods (on planeride or on the ground) when the destination is experiencing nighttime. Alluna gives me no side effects, unlike the hangover I feel after waking from sleeping pills induced slumber.

According to US Military Medics:

When traveling West leave in the day and arrive in the evening, go to sleep at you normal time.

When going East leave in the evening and arrive in the Mid-afternoon, sleep at your normal time.

If you are going South to North or North to South, you are screwed unless you can sleep normally on Airplaines.

This is assuming an average flight length of 10 - 11 hours.

I do not know how they figured this out but it works for me.

Would agree with China here up to a point.

West to East is normally fairly painless (so UK to BKK normally works well for me), East to West (UK to US) is a real pain and I find it screws me up far more.

EVA used to (may still have not flown with them for a while) almost perfect flight timing, leaving UK late at night arriving in BKK afternoon and on the return leaving lunchtime, arriving back mid evening.

If flying east to west, I always find leaving at lunchtime, getting back mid evening works best (even if the US military don't agree ).  Two other practical things I always do is to get reasonably pissed so I fall asleep after the meal, and sleep for 5-6 hours and also to buy the most comfortable seat I can afford, so that sleeping is a real possibility.

I think for those reluctant to pay business class prices the premium economy products e.g. Eva Evergreen Deluxe are worth the extra cost just for the ability to sleep better both ways, unless you can be fairly sure a flight is going to be empty.  Funnily enough (as a frequent business/first class traveller) the best sleep I ever had on an aircraft was LAX-LHR with Virgin laying across 3 economy seats.

There are some strategies for trying to work out how busy a flight will be, most are obvious (e.g. avoid Fridays and Sun/Mon).  If you can, then book later rather than earlier so you can get an idea of loadings and choose your flight appropriately.  Avoid travelling LHR BKK economy with BA/QANTAS since a lot of Australia traffic goes this way.  Pick an airline and flight which is newly scheduled or new to the route etc. etc.

Thanks for all the advise - I will put it to good use 1/08/04 -
HKK to LAX!

I will have been back 2 weeks this coming Friday and still feel out of it.  Part jetlag and part withdrawal symptoms.

It gets harder and harder to adjust to the differences between the two cultures.

I think I will look for some property in Chiang Mai this Dec. and consider pulling the plug!

Maybe I will start a new thread...

Thanks again.....

Mokewen - I feel your pain brother…

I agree with Ballburstin (staying awake as long as possible).  I always pull an all-nighter the night before my flight so by the time I get on the plane I'm exhausted and ready to fall asleep.  I'm usually to hyped to sleep for the first few hours so I stay awake until I have my first meal. The first nap usually only lasts 3-4 hours… Once I wake back up I'll eat again then drink half a bottle of NyQuil which always is a winner in putting me to sleep.

Irrelevant side note: I usually try to watch a movie to help pass the time which makes the flight not so excruciating (although it's usually a crappy movie).  I'm considering buying a portable DVD player to take with me so I can bring along a movie worth watching.

I am never lucky enough to get the emergency exit row for the extra leg room.  Plus I always seem to get the tallest person on the plane sitting in front of me with the seat all the way back before we even take off.  And of course I usually have the fat person sitting next to me rubbing elbows and the baby crying behind me.  Myself being a tall individual I always request the aisle seat although I find it extremely difficult to fall asleep with my head straight up.  Next time I'm going to take one of those neck pillows with me to help me out.  I found a good seat to have besides the emergency exit row seats is the very first row in coach (right behind the business class section) - that way you have no one sitting in front of you and you usually get your food and drinks first.   In addition, your TV monitor isn't on the back of a seat of someone reclined in front of you but rather pulls out from your arm rest which is nice.

Once I arrive in the LOS (which is usually around midnight) I get a massage immediately afterwards to work out the kinks. Then I go straight to bed - no going out the first night unless I'm only there for a few days which is never the case for me.

If it is the reverse and I'm coming home I usually go get some Taco Hell, eat, then cry myself to sleep…

I would imagine jetlag to not be a problem going to t-town since most of the fun and activities would be during late night hours anyway.  Eventually, your body would get adjusted to the normal hours there.  At least that's the way it is for me.  The problem for me is always coming back to CA from t-town.  I saw some "magical" anti jetlag pills or something on tv/ads.  What are those things and do they actually work ?
