For those of you not familiar with the term, a PCR DNA test is an HIV test that can detect if you've been expesed to HIV just 20 MINUTES PRIOR to the test (dont quote me, but it is something like 20 minutes  to 2 hours).. It is costly,  like $120 in California...  I am wondering if there are any places in BKK that have this test that you know of?   The usual HIV tests only test from 6 months prior to you taking the test (although 90% of people will show positive after 3 months)...

False positives?
False negatives?
How long has this test been in use?

It IS expensive, and I am not sure what the point is for most people.

For them the Western Blot (not Western Block, as someone misreported here) is entirely adequate.

BTW terminology like "exposed to HIV" is misleading and undesirable. Makes it sound like HIV flashed you in a hallway or something. If you are positive you haven't been exposed, you have been infected.  No room for weasel words here.

PCR is a DNA replicator. It is used, among others, to COMPARE the DNA of certain virus with the DNA of a "sample" e.g. your blood. Thus, if the test shows a MATCH you are done.

This PCR technique is quite common in Thailand but for other purposes e.g. to check presence of "white spot virus" on samples of marine shrimps. I've done it a couple of times to confirm virus presence in shirmp samples. However, I am aware that this PCR tecnique is widely use nowadays in cases of "sex abuse", etc. PCR will determine the DNA of the suspect and then compare it with a sample of semen, hair, skin or any trace left after the attack. If there is a match, the case is over. This PCR technique is just almost perfect (reliable). Ah! and yes, you can get the result of this test within 30 minutes.

Western Blot, as CJ pointed out, is usually recommended once you are given a "positive" result on HIV infection after a conventional test was performed on your blood sample. Doctors said that Western Blot is the final step in the confirmation process of HIV infection.

Thus, better play safe and be safe!!
