Someone posted a good question in another thread, and given the membership in this forum it is a good one:

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AT DON MUANG INTERNATIONAL about inbound passengers? It's hard to imagine them quarantening people by the 1000s....

To partly answer the question:

Thailand tightens border screening after first SARS death

First case of the kliing flu was discovered in the Kingdom. The SARS disease is under control in Thailand, govt says.

BANGKOK - Thailand increased its monitoring at airports and border checkpoints Sunday following the first death in the country attributed to a new flu-like illness that has killed at least 55 people and infected more than 1,550 worldwide.

Health officials at Bangkok's international airport are screening incoming passengers for the disease, called severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said.

About a dozen visitors have been quarantined so far, with most released within a few hours, but some kept for over a day, Sudarat said.

She emphasized that the stepped-up measures were prompted by the spread of the disease abroad, not locally.

"The disease is still under control in Thailand. We're still safe,'' she said.

On Saturday, a World Health Organization expert on communicable disease, Dr. Carlo Urbani, 46, died at a Bangkok hospital with SARS symptoms.

Some advice please from recent arrivals - I have a ticket booked to fly into BKK from Hong Kong on 20 April.  I have heard various stories from different people.  Arrivals at Chiang Mai from HK were just asked to fill in a form - no face masks.  What's the situation in BKK and is there enforcement of the face mask requirement?  I have no problem cancelling my trip - there's always another time.    The whole business is getting a bit out of hand anyway.  I read on one website that 36,000 people died in the US last year from the flu.  More people die here in HK from standard pneumonia than seem likely to die from SARS.  Fewer people here are wearing masks outdoors anyway - I would say down from 80% last week to around 50%.  Life goes on........

Basically it is the media that is, IMO, blowing this thing WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY out of proportion. SARS is a bitch, granted, but more people die each year from other ailments and afflictions than SARS right now. As for my travel plans to BKK, I ain't cancelling a thing. I refuse to live in fear and by the reports of media hounds spewing out juicy rhetoric in attempts to boost ratings which equal dollars.
True while the SARS thing is going on right now a little more caution than normal is necessary. But I would not call it a reason to circle the wagons and batten down the hatches. Anyway, from what I've read and researched about it, 95 PERCENT OF PEOPLE RECOVER IF THEY DO GET BIT BY THE BUG! 95 percent!!
Besides, at least in a worst case scenario, in the words of the late great Jim Morrison, "I hate to remind you but you're going to die."
Screw the b.s., screw the hysteria, screw the rhetoric, and go screw some TG's and LIVE!!!

ok guys....this is what i've heard from a buddy who had just got back from LOS.

for flights landing into BKK from SARS hit countries, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Canada and Tawian (no too sure about this one), the aircraft will be parked at a remote bay, that is u wont have the luxury of the aerobridge to the terminal. and all pax has to wear a mask, which will be distributed onboard. pls note that u have to wear it until u leave the airport or face a fine of B10000. (well, thats what i been told)

upon arrival, a shuttlebus will ferry all pax to the terminal where doctors and nurses are on hand to take yr temperature, and also to look out for symptons of SARS. if u are having a fever or yr body temperature is above 38 degree celcius, u will be refused entry into the Kingdom of THailand and deported on the next flight back home.

hope this info helps! any corrections or more accurate first hand info will be appreciated!

 regards,
 chrisboy
