According to a report by BBC News http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5165118.stm Male circumcision can significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection. It estimates that, if used in southern Africa it could avert 6 million infections and 3 million deaths over the next 20 years. Think about it here!

My son born not long ago... I DID think about it and no questions to be debated : circumcised within 48 hours! Lot of bullshit about pros and cons, but I wanted to hear nothing of it. Furthermore, I have a couple of friends who had to go through this in their 20s, for medical reason. Maaaaan! You don't want that to happen to you, or even to your worst enemy!!!

Down side is loss of sensitivy (? they say), and some religious-wacko stuff. To me, it's all about absence of sensibility!

Yes, the glans, due to the constant rubbing of clothing throughout the day, every day, loses it's sensitivity. Now, this may seem like a good thing - prolonging time to climax, but factor in the effect of Vitamin V (if you use it) and alcohol (if you use it) and condoms (because you DO use them, don't you?) and older gents can have serious problems coming. I did see something somewhere on the 'net called the 'man-hood' - a soft material hood that is worn over the end of the penis, an artificial foreskin if you will - which claimed to restore some sensitivity. Can't comment further, haven't tried it. Wagie - you should give serious thought to your son's upbringing viz-a-viz an appreciation of the importance of suitable underwear.

Well, yes, in the absence of showers, running water, proper awareness of personal hygiene, and common sense, circumcision appears like an appropriate means deal with hygiene issues, for the dumb masses.

Well, some parents are too busy to spend time on their children's upbriging, so I can see how some would chose an easy solution that requires no thoughht on their part.

I'd have to agree with you on that, though I'm afraid you probably meant to say something else... but you perfectly illustrate my earlier point.

A second benefit of circumcision is that women with circumcised partners have a greatly reduced risk for cervical cancer.

If you guys feverishly advocating all the 'benefits' of circumcision would pull your heads out of your asses for just a moment, you would realize that the 'benefits' you spout about are due to the circumcised penis being less bacteria infested due to the lack of foreskin - which really only makes a difference for people that lack personal hygiene. i.e. your penis will be less likely to be infected, if you never take any showers, or change underwear, if you are circumcised. Fortunately, for many of us, we are well aware of this wonderful invention of the 'shower', 'soap', and change underwear frequently. Those of you who are so adament about circumcision might want to consider that, instead of rote spoutings of headlines.

I don’t particularly care one way or the other. I am circumcise, and it was done within days of my birth. Not my choice but I could care less. Does not seem to have affected my state of mind, and as for sensitivity hard to miss what you never had. There does seem to be some people out there that are very adamant about not having it done. Besides the lack/loss of a certain level of sensitivity are there any other downsides to circumcision? Yes, yes, proper hygiene can prevent most problems related to not being circumcised, and I can not really see any adult getting it done unless they have problems that can be directly alleviated by getting it done. But seems like on ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure type of thing for newborns. Or in many cases simply going with the particular cultural norm at the time.
