http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-09-24-hiv-vaccine_N.htm excerpts from the article: "For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible. The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31% in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok." .......... "The Thailand Ministry of Public Health conducted the study, which used strains of HIV common in Thailand. Whether such a vaccine would work against other strains in the U.S., Africa or elsewhere in the world is unknown, scientists stressed. "This is a scientific breakthrough," Thai Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai told a news conference in Bangkok. "For the first time ever there is evidence that HIV vaccine has preventative efficacy."" .......... "The study was done in Thailand because U.S. Army scientists did pivotal research in that country when the AIDS epidemic emerged there, isolating virus strains and providing genetic information on them to vaccine makers. The Thai government also strongly supported the idea of doing the study."

Would you not use a condom if a vaccine reduced the risk of contracting AIDS by only 31%? Such a vaccine is hardly worth using if it reduces the risk by only 31%. However, perhaps it might show the way for a really effective vaccine.

Over 8,00p people were given a placebo. Another over 8,000 were given this vaccine. Of the 8,000 with the placebo about 70 tested positive for HIV some time later. Of the other 8,000 about 50 tested positive. That is how they come to their 30% reduction. In other words, out of 8,000 people 20 -that is 0.025%- less tested positive for HIV.... and that doesn't mean they will get AIDS. Actually some people get AIDS without testing positive for HIV. Oh, but sorry, if you do not test positive for HIV it cannot be called AIDS even if all symptoms are the same. Summary, I am very skeptical to anything related to HIV-AIDS research. Still just in case, wear a condom. In this instance the difference in cost between error I and error II type of mistakes is too costly.

Thing is, would you be ready to take some serious drugs on a permanent basis to prevent HIV? Remember it's not like your annual influenca shot... It's more some 3-times a day medication with zero tolerance in timing... Safer sex is a nicer option... especially taking the more nasty than hazardous other threats (STDs) into account...

So they took two vaccines that were tested as useless, mix them, and then inject the mix to some "volunteer" to see what happen...and this is what is called "science"? The "positive result" is hardly convincing at all and could very well be random anyway... Madfrog

As a matter of fact the medications of the successful HIV treatments of recent years are mixtures of existing less effectiv single medications... That's why they call it "the cocktail"...

yes, and interestingly enought the more they lessen the doses in this cocktail, the less mortality rate in the HIV+ community... Madfrog
