Sydney has alot of Thais -
But you don't need an official record to prove this if you're walking the streets of Sydney with TV star Rinlanee "Joy" Sripen. With Wanida, the soap she's currently starring in, being the talk of the town, Rinlanee's stroll through Sydney was marked by greetings from Thai passers-by every 10 minutes. Thai chefs at a restaurant offered her special treats and, while at a supermarket, Rinlanee was stopped for photographs by almost 10 fans. But despite her cross-continental popularity, Rinlanee said she has never considered herself a star.
"I think of my lifestyle as a profession. Acting is something I do for a living," said Rinlanee in a candid chat with 'Muse' on a plane journey back to Bangkok from Australia, where she attended the 2010 Blackmores Sydney Running Festival as a campaign ambassador of Blackmores (Thailand).
As part of the Australian vitamins and dietary supplement giant, Blackmores Thailand has been sponsoring representatives from Thailand, previously athletes, to participate in this annual sporting event. This year, the company shifted gear to include the showbiz actress in the hope that Rinlanee's star power would help raise awareness of health and the importance of exercise.
With this in mind, Rinlanee was the perfect choice. Unlike some celebrity advocates of good health who continue their toxic lifestyles behind the scenes, Rinlanee is a true example of clean living. As co-host of Preawpak - a travel and dining-out show - she's closely associated with healthy food. She never skips a meal and, as we noticed during the 5-day trip with the actress, she always makes sure her meal is packed with nutritious fruits and vegetables.
"I haven't been sick for many years. I hardly ever catch a cold," she said. "The only health problem I have is the occasional bout of skin eczema."
Her confession came a bit of a surprise considering her hectic schedule that only permits minimal rest. But she has been in showbiz since she was 18 years old, so its not new. At the tender age of 19, Rinlanee was cast in the role of the most loved and memorable character in a television adaptation, Pojaman Swangwong from the novel Baan Sai Thong. The role shot Rinlanee to stardom, as it has done for all the actresses who have portrayed the character, and yet, Rinlanee's Pojaman was met with a more mixed feedback than any other Pojaman has ever received.
"I didn't feel any pressure during the production at all," she said "To me, it was just an opportunity because I was trusted with this role. Like all others, I grew up having this image of Pojaman in two plaits and a school uniform. But I felt a bit of pressure when the series was about to be aired, with the buzz around it and as people began talking about the new Pojaman. As it turned out, there were both those who liked and disliked it but Pojaman remains the role I was most remembered for."
Although she won the role of the famous nang-ek (heroine), Rinlanee's showbiz career hasn't followed a typical course. In recent years, the actress has more often played nangrai (female villain or the bitch, if you prefer it) roles. Strangely, Rinlanee's nangrai doesn't seem to fit in the stereotypical nangrai category.
In fact, many of her characters reveal a pitiable quality. Rinlanee's bitches are more often than not bullied before they start bitching themselves. They're just spoiled beautiful girls who, after losing or are on the verge of losing their loved one, turn ugly. As Rinlanee herself puts in, she never sees her characters as evil.
"Not that I have sympathy for them, but I think it's just understanding, which is what you need to have in order to portray a character," she said. Rinlanee also cited her recent role in the hit soap Wanida as an example. Her character, Pitsamai, she said, is simply a well-bred lady who turned bitchy after realising that she was about to lose the man who had proposed to her after he was forced into an alternative arranged marriage.
"Both the producer and director said that if Pitsamai hadn't have changed, Prajak [the hero] would never have left her for Wanida. But it's not that easy for a woman to tolerate and just wait as her lover walks down the aisle with another woman."
And after playing nangrai roles for a few years, Rinlanee soon returned to nangek roles once again in the two soaps currently in production.
"It's really a big challenge because the role is for a really angelic good girl who's bullied by a nangrai all the time. It's a huge challenge for me to convince fans and audiences who have seen me playing bad girls for years."
